BDP-3 and playing multi-channel ripped recordings
« on: 27 Feb 2018, 04:08 am »
Hi,

As the physical CD/DVD/Blu-ray disc are disappearing, playing multi-channel ripped audio is a challenge.

A lot of A/V receivers are capable of of playing multi-channel audio through either the HDMI or the USB ports.

And the question I have is related to the BDP-3 player and its capability to send a ripped multi-channel audio track to an A/V receiver? :) :)

I know you can send the multi-channel audio from a computer to  A/V receiver, but it would be great that the BDP- 3 can play both multi-channel or 2 channel audio from a network drive and send it to separate DAC processors - SP3 and BDA-3 for examples.... :thumb:

I don't know of any D/A converter that can play multi-channel except the exasound and its a hassle with it as you have to by multiple units and deal with crossover. If you own an SP3 and use its Stereo7 7.1 or Dolby Prologic IIx music, you won't miss the BDA3. In fact, for about 80% of the time, I listen to these codecs more than I listen to the BDA3. :D

Hi,

Yes, SP3 is fine for multi-channel audio from a DVD/Blu-ray player, but can we eliminate the rotating disc media?

What I am looking for is a music player that can play both 2 channel and multi-channel ripped audio and send it to separate components - SP3 for multi channel/ BDA-3 for two channel audio formats.

Are you trying to play discrete multi-channel or matrix? You should know there is not that much multi-channel software to choose. I would not hold my breath waiting for the industry to produce more discreet multi-channel as there is no profitable market for it. Enjoy the present as life is too short.

There are lots of multi-channel recordings available, and more are being issued all the time.  Blu-Ray audio is gaining popularity.  It has the advantage that market penetration of Blu-Ray players is much greater than for SACD players.

True, and I own just about all of them in the genres I like most. But, they are too few, and I do not miss the lack of choices because I still buy CDs and I have no problem using surround for them using the SP3. Plus, these are new releases.

I think it would be best that Chris from Bryston comment on the ability of the BDP-3 to send multi-channel audio signal to AVR (like SP3) or a two channel audio signal to DAC (like BDA-3)?

This would mean we can access the ripped audio from a network drive and deliver it to different components - multi track signal to AVR (SP3) or a two track signal to a DAC (BDA-3) or even AVR (SP3) etc...  No more physical disc player would be needed to play your collection of musical recordings... :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

I haven't had the chance to connect a BDP-3 to an SP3 to test, at the very least would require suspending MPD and playing the file via mplayer.
