I need in-wall cabinets..anyone know where to buy?
« on: 25 Dec 2004, 04:12 pm »
I plan on changing my side surrounds to in-walls.

I have the drivers and XO, but need cabinets.  Do you guys know anyone who has pre-made in wall cabinets?

I can have the baffles made for my speakers.

They will be made to fit inside my studs, so about 14" w X 4" deep.

Not sure what heigth yet.

Drivers will be Scan Speak Revelator 9900 tweeter and 5.5 mid woof.

Thanks

I don't know of anyone who has made pre-built "in-wall" cabinets, the downsides to a cabinet is that you'll lose approx 3/4" of depth of an already tight space, since a normal 2x4 is really 1.5 x 3.5..  You could try simply sealing off an area above and below your baffle to simulate an enclosure, a bit leaky, but better than an infinite baffle.

I use Triad in my ceiling for rear surrounds and they use a cabinet 3.5" to go in-wall.

My uncle is a cabinet builder in Minneapolis and he and my audio geek cousin built my speakers for me. If custom work interests you they could probably do it. PM me if interested.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

I have a local (furniture) cabinet maker if I want the custom route.

I was hoping a Madisound or a Parts express type place might have them pre-made and cheap.

Just the baffle might actually be a good idea on one wall as there is foam insulation between the studs, and cement behind it.  The other side is just drywall and would need to be a bit sturdier.

How 'bout you just get some of that 1/2" cement board and put a sheet on the "back" of the enclosure on both the drywall side, and the concrete side (glued in with a construction adhesive).

Could even use it for the rest of the sides. Then everything would be fairly equal on both sides.

Marbles,
This may be a stupid suggestion (one of many), but why don't you just sell those drivers and buy a pair of decent in-wall speakers?  You could get a good buck for the drivers and pick up some pretty good in-walls.  I believe AV123 was coming out with some that looked cool.  Also, ACI sells in-wall speakers as does partsexpress.  I also believe Theil makes some high-end in-walls.  Can't help you on which one sounds good because I haven't heard any.

There are lots of things to keep in mind on in-wall speakers.  Crossovers that work on stand-alone speakers may not be a good choice in an in-wall application.  You may wind up spending lots of money on speakers with great drivers that sound bad.  I don't know for sure, but I'd check with someone before taking this route.  Just a suggestion.

Jackman, good advice all...

Rick Craig would make the XO to take into account the wall as the baffle.

He mentioned that it would be better for a local cabinet maker to make the cabinets as his is expensive for inwalls.

The drivers would have been coming out of a one in the world pair of marble mini 9.0 column shaped nOrh speakers.  I won't sell the speakers, but wasn't using them either, so I thought I would use the drivers.

I did get a chance to do some experimenting today and tonight.

The nOrhs sounded OK, not great but not bad as matches for the VMPS speakers.  They are so damn heavy I was worried that the one over the sofa would fall.

After watching HPIII - Prisoner of Askaban tonight with the family, I swapped out some B&W 601S2's.  Normally quite a step down.

I calibrated them and put on Steely Dan's 2 Against Nature DVD-A.

They matched VERY VERY well with the VMPS  :o   Must be the metal tweeter.  Anyway they fit the area much better and sound better too.

Looks like I will soon be selling a pair of VMPS 626's.

An inwall  speaker will be in my near future, but I now doubt they will be made with Scan Speak drivers.

Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Merry Christmas to all.

Marbles,
Cool.  Rick knows his stuff and I'm sure he can make you some cool in-walls.  He may know a good cabinet-maker who can help you out.  Not for anything, but those Fonteck ribbons are really cheap right now at Madisound.  Something like 62 bucks each.  These are supposed to be VERY close to the Arum Cantus, which are supposed to be VERY VERY close to the upgraded VMPS tweeters.  You might want to get Rick to make you something with the Fonteck ribbons in a sealed in-wall design.  Best of luck!  I'm sure you will come up with something cool.
