BDP-3: Questions regarding purchase
« on: 18 Dec 2017, 05:44 pm »
Hello, Everyone.

I’m looking to buy a BDP-3 and want to be sure that I’ll be able to use it with what I have right now.

I have a BDA-1.  The BDP-3 will work with the BDA-1, correct?

I’m filling a 1 TB SSD (file system: NTFS) with files in FLAC format on a Windows machine (Windows 10, 64-bit).  My hope is to connect the SSD to the BDP-3 through a USB 3.0 connection.  I know that the drive can be installed internally, but I’m considering an external connection right now.  My idea will work, yes?  I’m not missing anything?

Another question I have is about Wi-Fi.  A wired connection to the BDP-3 isn’t convenient in my current setup, so buying the Wi-Fi dongle from Bryston would be recommended, is that right?  Or might the internal option be preferred?  Either one?

Those are my main questions.  A less important question I have is whether it’s possible to install more RAM in the BDP-3.  A higher-density stick, extra stick, etc.  Just wondering about this.

I’m still using a BCD-1, and it’s working flawlessly.  Since that unit is no longer in production and spare drives are no longer available, I’d like to add the digital player to my system.

With appreciation of thoughts or advice anyone might share . . .

Just buy the BDP-3. I would not get a hard drive built in with 8 slots for USB. And, yes, it will work with the BDA-1 or any other D/A converter.

There is a big advantage to the internal wifi - two substantial antenna's make it much more capable of receiving signals.

Is there any disadvantage in having those antennas near the audio circuitry? FWIW, I think Auralic also recommends wireless. Probably for electrical isolation purposes. Although, are there tradeoffs to having wifi inside?

Thanks for the information, James.

And thanks to Chris for the definitive answer on 8GB of RAM being the maximum for the BDP-3.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for lower pricing on the internal Wi-Fi option.

In reply to gbaby, I appreciate the confident "just buy it" direction.  That's certainly my plan now  :)

I own the BDP-2 and I am loving the heck out of it. The ability to access all my CDs through digital files is fascinating to me. Its like the Jetsons have come to fruition. And, the icing on the cake is that the sound is better than CD. :o

I know this was not addressed to me, but the only thing I would use wi fi for is to stream the the radio stations built in the unit. I would rip from either a computer or the BOT-1.

You can, but it'll be slower then ripping to a dive that is wired.  If it's just a couple of CD's I'd say do it, otherwise I agree with gbaby comment of don't.
