unused inputs switched off or stops needed?
« on: 5 Oct 2017, 07:11 am »
HI James,

Just found out about these input stoppers... Hope not to ask a silly question, but would these be useful/needed on Bryston pre-amps, in my case the Bp26 specifically? Or are unused inputs switched off. If useful, what would be the deciding quality to shop for. Should they 'short' or not. Ive found several, Audioquest for example which seem to go for 31 Euro a pair.....

Previously i was told that other than being a cause for picking up interference, unused inputs could cause crosstalk to the other inputs being used, so apparently different thoughts go about.

Cheers,
Marius

They're fancy dust covers imo.

Bryston's amp jacks short when nothing's inserted in them.

These do look nice, though: (the XLR may be worth getting, since those jacks are big and can collect dust over time)

I recently put some Audioquest stoppers on all the unused RCA inputs on my BP26 and it cured an ongoing buzz I've had for years in my 4BSST amp.

Wow that's something. Do you have both amps on the same power outlet?

The small metal RCA and XLR covers for unused inputs work, but mainly in a small way.
They DO stop low level 'noise' (RFI) from entering the audio data. So the noise floor becomes blacker, cleaner.

It is not much noise. But if you are looking for the last bit of clean low level detail, then the unused RCA/XLR covers can be worth buying.
I bought some nice ones off eBay from a fellow in Taiwan. I paid like $1 each for RCA, and $2 for XLR covers.
I bought like a HUNDRED RCA covers... I even have them on the TV.

Naturally some folks will call BS .. No problem, just do not use them.

The cover come in at all sorts of prices. Cardas being the most expensive.. VALAB (vintage_audio_lab)is the seller I bought from on eBay.  fast service, bought from several times.

If the covers stopped the buzz, it wasn't the AC. LOL

Are we using shorting plug types or just covers. We have found in every case a shorting type is most affective. Speaking of shorting if using USB short SPDIF out. Happy listening.

Tried the foam ....

Back to business, it’s not only the inputs that might need covering. I wonder since whenever I connect (not even turn on) my 28’s i can notice static electricity activity in my esl’s.
Especially when humidity goes up.

I use bare wires . Maybe they should be shielded better?
What use is ‘stopping’ inputs if bare wires from power amp to speaker are able to pickup all they can...

Just wondering.

Certain types of sleeves pick up dust and static like crazy. Urethane for one. Bad. I had one interconnect from a notable mfr, that was sleeved in urethane. Not good.

I think using bare unshielded wire for interconnects is asking for trouble. Esp if they lie near each other or near power cables/transformers.

I dont have unshielded interconnects, only
 speakercables.

Apparently that shouldn’t cause any trouble:https://www.stereophile.com/content/shielded-speaker-cables-1

Shielded speakercables should even be avoided: http://www.mediacollege.com/forum/showthread.php?1388-Speaker-Wire-Shielded-Versus-Unshielded

Of course the exception of electrostatics is mentioned which makes me doubt again about my setup specific needs...

Cheerio

I have mounted 100nf minimum ca200v via 100ohm ca 6w to ground at the speaker terminals to short radio frequensies to ground.
Mostly so the amp does not have to deal with radio frequensis coming back in thru the speaker cabels witch can act as antennas.
