Sony AVD-C700ES is now shipping
« on: 17 Dec 2003, 09:45 pm »
After placing my order with Oade in October, it went out today. $760 + $30 for shipping.
I promised to keep folks informed, and I will.
Half of me wants it be a great purchase and the other half hopes it fails miserably.

Has Sony increased the price of this model?
http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/ProductDetailDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=168324&navigationPath=32100n32104
It shows $1699 as the list price.
If so, $765 from Oade is an incredible deal.
Regardless, I'm sending mine back. To use all the remote control functions like setting speaker levels for multichannel playback and switching between stereo and multichannel require the use of a tv screen.
The remote is also way to complex for easy use in a darkened room, which is my listening environment. UGH!

If anyone wants mine for $725, let me know.

the previous models (50es & 70es) were always about double the money in canada. not sure why that is.

How's the sound again Jerry?  Does the unit have pre-outs?  If I wanted to could I use the unit specifically as a SACD/DVD player and integrate it with the rest of my system?

Thanks

I'm very impressed with the sound, but I refuse to compare it directly to my main system because I could never use it the way I'd need to. I will have to check on the pre-outs. This is from the website listed above, though:

Audio LINE IN/OUT (Analog) : 3/1
Audio LINE IN/OUT (Digital) : 2 Optical 1 Coaxial/1 Optical
Video Signal IN/OUT: 3/2 (3 S-VIDEO INPUT/1 Component In/2 S-Video output/1 Component video output)

From the picture on the Oade site, it looks like it's a record out, not a true preamp out. :|

Mine arrives tomorrow  8)

On the pricing, those are Canadian $$ to make it $1699.  The US list price is $999.

How is the transport noise for the C700ES? I have held onto my C70ES, but my biggest complaint is transport noise during quiet passages.

none (that I can hear).
The changer and tray operate very smoothly. It's a bit slow, though, reading the disc before its ready to play.

Interesting; the AVD-C70ES had a true preamp analog out, whereas the C700ES no longer has this feature.

Jerry, couldn't one hook up a TV long enough to complete setup and then operate the unit' basic functions without?

The C70ES had no such preout.

I've been running the '700 for a few days now.

The good:    The sound, the DVD picture quality

The bad:    This thing is HUGE - very deep.   The remote is very non-intuitive.   The front panel display is impossible to read unless you're within a couple of feet.    I also haven't figured out how to pause a CD/SACD, switch to TV audio, and then switch back without it restarting the whole disc.

I guess I should RTFM.....
I'm glad Oade Bro's have a 30 day return policy - might have to use it.

Brad, I share your frustration, but if you can put up with the nits, you get an awful lot of performance from a single small box.

I hope you are aware that Oade charges a 15% restocking fee.

Fortunately for me, a friend took mine off my hands.

Jerry - you're right - it has a terrific sound (that will probably be able to be improved once the modders get a hold of it)

It also has (subjectively) more power than the Panny digital receiver.

The transport is a little noisy and it takes a while to read a disc, too.

15% restock isn't unfair (especially given Oade's good price).
