Okja on Netflix

Directer Bong Joon Ho returns to South Korea with Okja, a touching story about the friendship between a girl and a GMO Super Pig. The story is both a satire and a comedy, my friend Alice had her doubts when I suggested Okja but she liked it a lot and we had many laughs. Tilda Swindon and Paul Dano are great comic actors and Jake Gyllenhaal is crazy and over the top.

Okja reminded me of "The Host", another Bong Joon Ho movie released in 2006, it is nice to seem him back to form after "Snowpiercer", which I liked but not everyone did. Bong Joon Ho's other movies are "Memories of Murder" and "Mother"; all are excellent and worth searching for. His movies are authentic Korean, sub-titled (even Okja has sub-titles), and shows Korea as only a native can.

Although cute and cuddly in the beginning the film takes a dark turn halfway through so definitely PG13. Small children will be scarred for life so please watch Okja first before giving your young children nightmares for years to come and turning them into vegans.

I watched it last night and enjoyed it very much. There were some scenes I didn't care for but I'll give it an 85% and recommend friends watch it.

The early shots of the mountains where Okja lives look so much like the mountains in central Taiwan. It made me homesick for Taiwan. :(

I would have liked to see more of the super pigs' intelligence displayed or better developed.

Anatomy of a Scene - the NY Times has a scene from Okja narrated by Boon Joon Ho featured this week:

The clip is a good representation of the excellent animation and broad humor in Okja.

I BEEN TOLD BY A MOD TO PUT SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!For me Okja was just a ok movie being predictable and slow at times with some cheesy acting....It could of been more interesting if they made Okja special and stand out from the rest of the other modified pigs.....Okja looks likes like has been crossed with Hippo DNA.....Since she has only one tit I assume she can only have one offspring at a time.

Okja must be really intelligent when she showed it by saving the little girl.....plus at the end of the movie it seemed like the girl understood what Okja whispered in her ear as if Okja could speak and comprehend language.

I prefer the HOST movie over Okja as the Host was much more exciting and the monster was very unique in appearance.
