Blood Simple - a movie haiku
« on: 17 May 2017, 03:27 am »
Preamble
The Coen brothers' first movie.  I saw it a loooooong time ago on a small TV and a crappy VHS tape.  Time to revisit, on the big screen and after a fresh remaster.  Warning, spoilers below.

Haiku
Location:  Texas, where you're on your own.  It all starts with an affair between to young good looking people:

The husband is not pleased:

He thinks getting this guy involved is a good idea:

I love that the Coens can communicate so much in just a single image.  Like, you know this isn't good:

And I am pretty sure they were one of the very first to use a shot like this:

Summary

A cool little movie where people assume the worst about one another, act on that assumption, and live to regret it (or don't live).  And between the husband and the PI, you've got two of the sleaziest characters ever put on film.  Enjoyed the film.  Glad I don't live in Texas anymore.

Love me some Coen brothers.  8)  This one started it all.  Barry Sonnenefeld did the Cinematography & I love his work.

Didn't realize there is a remaster. Will definitely have to revisit this one even tho' M. Emmet Walsh totally freaked me out in that bathroom scene (gave the Psycho shower scene a run for the money).

I also have not seen it since Beta -VHS days. I remember being highly moved by the movie. Guess I will add it to my list of films to view.

Not just any remaster either.  A Criterion remaster:

New, restored 4K digital transfer, approved by cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld and filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray

A startlingly good film, well worthy of a revisit now and then.

I also thought Zhang Yimou's tribute to Blood Simple was a lot of fun, sort of a Qing dynasty version with striking visuals and some dark humor.

Awesome.  Yeah, I do the haiku style review using short blurbs and screen captures to give people a little flavor of the movie.  If the pics don't show up then it kills the whole idea!
