I would suggest that you will get the most gain in that application by by-passing the Sonicaps in your Alpha's with the new generation 2 Sonicaps in a .1uF value. Plus, these are very inexpensive.

Hi Danny, Have you tried these new V caps, that Chris makes? If so, what were your impressions? Ray -

I know two that have, including one member here on AC and I have heard their impressions, but I have not tried them myself, so just to stay on top of things I ordered a sample V-cap today.

Hi Danny, will be interested in your impressions. Thanks. Ray -

Well guys, if you want my impressions of the V-cap then you'll have to order some and send them to me.

I ordered some V-caps from Chris to try out myself but my check was returned. I guess he would not like for me to compare these to the other caps I carry.

Funny thing is that lots of other cap manufacturers have sent out their caps for free, in hopes that I might carry their line.

Danny, you could have just let this go. But since you've decided to bring this public, I'd like to set the record straight. Now for "the rest of the story"...

a) You ordered ONE (not SOME) .1 uF V-Cap.  What kind of listening evaluation were you going to do with one cap, Danny?

b) You were touting the Platinums on the Madisound board a couple months ago, and said they were better than the V-Cap. That's all well and good.... except that you've never heard the V-Cap.

c) You also said in a private e-mail that you were basing your claims at Madisound on "inside" info from one of my competitors, who just happens to be a former business partner of yours. I contacted this competitor, and he all but called you a liar, and mentioned that an apology was forthcoming from you. Then the story changed to "maybe you were just having some fun with me" because you were upset I posted about my V-Caps at A-Circle market square.

d) You might be a peach of a guy, and your work seems to be well respected, but pardon me if I don't trust your judgement on evaluating my caps to potentially "have fun with me" again, Danny. I think I'll leave the evaluations to actual users who don't have an axe to grind.

That said, if you'd like me to post the full, unedited e-mail exchanges regarding this incident, I'd be happy to. Your call...

Good luck with the Platinums.

Best,

Hi Chris,

Why do you think that a comparison with one cap is not a good one?
I ask only because I was considering buying one of each cap myself, to use as a bypass in my tweeter xo circuit.  Eventually I'd just keep the one I like best....personally, I doubt I'll be able to hear a difference.

Is there a problem with this kind of approach to comparing the caps?
I dont want to waste my time or money, if it won't work.  Forgive me if my question is basic.  I'm a newbie with respect to these things.

Thanks

Chris, There is more to the rest of the story than what you know. There is a reason for everything.

I'll respond to your points by the letter you used.

A) I can make some good comparisons with a single cap. Used as a coupling cap in a pre-amp stage in one channel compared to another cap in the other channel, and using my switching device, I can compare one to the other in mono, back to back, with instant switching.

B) I believe I was responding on the Mad board in a thread where V-caps were being touted and I mentioned that the better performing Sonicap Platinums were less expensive. My references to the Platinums being better came from others in the industry that had compared them of whom I respect and trust their judgement.

Since this was second hand information and not of my own opinion I felt it best that I compare them myself. I should not have stated what I did without having listened to them myself.

C) That fact that you called one of your competitors that I used to have a business partnership with means little to me. Furthermore, do you really think that a competitor with be forthright in providing you with anything other than information that might be misleading? I can't image him giving you any useful information.

To the second part of that one: My telling you that I was just having some fun with you was a way of getting you to just drop it and move on. Some of what I said was boarder line sensitive information that shouldn't have been shared. I didn't feel like giving you a detailed information was in the best interest of myself or others.

D) Actually your caps would have gotten a fair and honest evaluation from me, and they still might if you ever decide to send them out to me.

I don't have an axe to grind. You do not see me for who I really am. While I do sell a competing line of caps to yours, I am not a cap manufacturer or your competition. I am a potential customer. I sell what I like and what I think is a good value for my customers. I buy and sell literally thousands of caps each year.

If your caps were better than what I sell now, or offer a better value, then I would be interested in selling them. But for me to drop Sonicap Platinums to carry V-caps, the V-caps would not only have to be better but be twice as good. They are in fact over twice the price. So going into it I would be pretty skeptical but still open minded, fair, and honest.

If like you said, you would rather leave evaluations to the end users then that is fine too. There are already quite a few trying both right now. You can solicit more comparisons if you like.
