NIN- "The Downward Spiral Deluxe Edition" on DVD-A
« on: 23 Nov 2004, 05:07 am »
I'm not sure when it's due out, but I just read that Trent Reznor is personally handling the 5.1 Ch remix for DVD-A of The Downward Spiral for a 2 disc deluxe edition.  Has anyone heard when it's supposed to be released?  I haven't listenen to NIN for years, but I really dug that one back in the day.  I'm curious to hear it mixed for surround by Reznor himself.

The sa-cd version has bonus songs and the dvd-a is one of those dual discs.

There both out today.

Crap! :x   I was hoping to avoid SACD, but I don't wanna mess with DualDisc if I can help it.  Guess I'll get the SACD anyway.

Was this recording orignially done directly to digital PCM?  If so I would think DVD-A would be the way to go.  I keep hearing from "those in the know" that  unless music was recorded in analog and then the A/D done with DSD equipment or orignially recorded in DSD, you shouldn't get it on SACD.

Of course, I haven't had the chance to actually test that theory, so I could just be repeating garbage.  (fair disclosure)

I have the SACD coming my way.  I actually saw this and did the preorder thing a good month or two ago.   Since my CD was pretty scratched up (from the time when most of my listening was in my car) and I was curious to see if there is improved fidelity, I bit.  This will be another album where I have it on all three formats (CD, LP & SACD).

Have you guys checked out "And All That Could Have Been" on DVD?

The audio through a Phillips 963SA sounds good.  The video portion is off the charts...  8)

The first SACDs I got really sounded wretched.  The demo SACD that Sony ships with some of their SACD/DVD players was truly awful.

Perhaps they are getting better...

Just got my SACD of TDS tonight.  Been listening to it in the "sweet spot".  Very interesting.  I have a MCH sacd player but have never once hooked it up MCH.  I am playing the 2CH sacd layer and haven't compared it to the CD layer but I notice already that there are a number of things I haven't noticed on the the original in spatial terms.  It seems that Reznor has played around a bit with shifting his voice and his voice backing himself by playing with perceived localization.

Got anything new to report Josh?

Is the SACD worth getting when i already have the cd?

has anyone got the DVDA perhaps thats better? :)

im hanging out for the fragile!  I wonder if NIN is more suited to SACD or DVDA... im guessing DVDA.

I'm actually interested to see what could be done with Pretty Hate Machine.  It already has quite a bit of trippy ambience, especially on Ring Finger.
