NAS/Sonica/Jriver Issues
« on: 28 May 2017, 11:30 pm »
So I’m very much a computer audio noob.

I’m running JRiver on Server 2012 with Audiophile Optimizer, without JPlay.

I was using a single CAPS computer to DAC via USB.  Storage is on my Synology 1513+.

I can’t seem to get my new Sonica working with USB so I’ve been using it plugged into my Ethernet switch.  It didn’t work with my computer and it didn’t work with my MicroRendu either.

When running of the Ethernet via the Ethernet switch, I’m not entirely clear as to what is happening now in terms of how it is being processed.  Is my PC now acting as a kind of “control” PC and the processor in the NAS and/or Sonica is acting as the “audio” PC?

Also, I’m not sure if it is pushing DSD to the Sonica when I’m playing DSD on JRiver.

Also, also, it seems to skip and stutter at the beginning of tracks, particularly with higher rez tracks.

All of this seems to be taking me down a rabbit hole.

So here are my questions.

1.   I tried to increase the RAM on my NAS before, to no avail.  It failed and I don’t think Synology supports it anymore.   But I read that I could get a Synology 2 bay expansion unit, load it with 2 SSD drives and use it as cache memory.

Could that be a cure to the stuttering and otherwise my things run more smoothly?

2.   When looking in to this I read about MinimServer.  Is it a good idea to load that on to my Synology?  Will it work with JRiver playing on the computer?  I am not entirely sure that the Synology is playing DSD and high rez on my Sonica.

3.   Any ideas as to why nothing seems to play on my Sonica USB?  The Sonica seems to recognize the devices, but no music comes out.

Thanks!
