adjustable L pad using removable resistors
« on: 22 Jan 2017, 07:35 pm »

I'm looking for ideas/suggestions on how to implement a setup  to adjust the sound level of a tweeter at speaker level voltage using high quality resistors that could be interchanged for different attenuation levels. I'm presently using an adjustable L pad which does the job but I want something that has better sound quality.

Why not just use your variable resistor to find the volume you like, then take a VOM and measure the resistance?  Then sub in a resistor with the closest value.

Duke LeJeune has been using resistors in an external terminal cup to affect treble response in most of his designs. Not sure if that's what you're looking for but hopefully Duke will respond to this thread...

Yes, that's exactly what I want.

You could use autoformers.  See the "Speaker Level Autoformers" on Dave Slagle's site as an example.

There are a few details of which to be aware, however - a relevant thread:

You could go for broke with something like this: https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/l-pads-attenuators/fostex-r100t-transformer-type-attenuator/
The problem with transformer based attenuators is they get into hundreds of dollar in short order. I'd like to avoid spending that kind of money and just keep it simple with resistor based adjustable system in which once I settled on a level, I could use high end resistors to get that last extra bit of SQ.

Well... I was quite specific in using the phrase "go for broke:lol:

I simply used alligator clips and Mills resistors until tweeter level was where I liked it, the removed clips and soldered resistor.  Cheap and easy.
