Streaming service and hardware
« on: 6 Jan 2017, 07:27 pm »
I need help I am a newb when it comes to digital music streaming and hardware all though I used to own
a squeezbox touch I really do not know where to begin, I have researched a little. I just got a PS Audio
Direct stream JR dac and will be getting the memory player but for now I am going to compare it to my
Oppo BDP105 with a coax cable to my preamp etc. I do want to listen to internet feeds through the dac,
I am going to run a ethernet cable from my comcast wifi router to the dac. It looks like the best sounding
control software is roon with Tidal as the source for music (I do eventually want to get a nas or nuc to load all
my cd's onto eventually because since I am nearing retirement age I do not want to burden my family with my
library in the future).

So my question is what do I need to use the internet for free music in the highest resolution possible without
buying a dedicated computer to use for my audio system, I do have a home computer in another room that is
hooked up by wifi. I looked at micoRendu and Rasberry Pi but I am confused what else I need I am willing to
get a android tablet if needed to control the player if needed (I do have a android phone though).

 :duh:

I live in MD/DC area if anyone wants to meet or we can talk by phone also.

I posted here because this forum has given me more information to improve my audio enjoyment in the past.

Thanks,
JT

The 105 is capable of streaming from your network or playing from attached local hard drives.  The Oppo Media Control App is free.

Thanks Phil, yes I forgot about that I think I just need to plug in the usb,
but I will probably sell it when I get the DMP, so from there I would still
need something else

You can access whatever is on your network.  I have a couple of 103Ds and recently got a 203.  I access my NAS in another room to play things (one 103D is now in the master bedroom which feeds the outdoor speakers so it really makes it easy - going to take my old 93 and some music on hard drives to the upstairs bonus/guest room when I get to it).  If you have another DAC then the digital out (of the 105) can play many formats.

Based on the manual - http://www.psaudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/DirectStream-Memory-Player-Owners-Manual-V1-Rev-A.pdf

it may not have the same functionality as something like an Oppo or a PC when connected to your network.

So this is the model?  http://www.psaudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/PWT.pdf

From a quick read it looks like the internet functions are at least substantially similar and therefore what I said earlier should apply

No again the DMP uses the internet for software that identifies the artist not to surf music sources
like Tidal.

Would prefer not to pay for Roon also.

I was on tidal's site still not sure if they offer cd quality or above streaming like my old squeezebox.

To simplify it even more can I download/subscribe to Tidal on my pc in my kitchen which is connected
by wifi to my router than my router has an cat5 cable going to my listening room to my dac. Can I also
add the or a app to my phone(android) to control/stream music from my pc to my dac through the ethernet
cable to a device(which is what I am asking about hooked up to the dac through usb/coax/xlr digital cable) that
will allow me to select different stations or music in the library of the subscription and listen through the dac.

I do not have a computer, nas or etc. with music burned or downloaded on it

As noted earlier, the functionality is apparently not the same as an Oppo and as you indicated the internet connection is for identifying music.  It would appear to be as its name indicates a (specialty) transport vs. some other products like an Oppo that do many things.

Also I do not have a video screen in my room either

I was thinking something like a Aurilic Aries mini but that is still
a little pricey and looks like an apple type control is needed

Maybe a rasberty pi 3 but I am not that computer savy so not sure
Where i install the app operating system like tidal, jriver etc. am
Willing to buy an android tablet

Any help anyone

If you want to test the waters and see if you like streaming try the Muzo Cobblestone - it's inexpensive and easy to set up. - http://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/linkplay-muzo-cobblestone-internet-music-player/

Maybe have a look at this: http://www.bluesound.com/en-us/products/node-2/?cl
Cheap, pretty good sound (very good with an external dac) and can basically do everything you want.

Ok it looks like I can hook my PS Audio DS Jr directly to the internet
with the ethernet input and use a service like Tidal

http://www.psaudio.com/ps_how/…..bridge-ii/

So I do not need the Blluesound streamer as
long as I put BubbleUPnP on my phone and that will control Tidal from my pc
in the kitchen, correct? Do I need a Tidal control app on my phone?

Why would I need Tidal and Roon will Roon provide a higher resolution stream,
again I am talking about music online not on my computer
