Does Mute On A Receiver Cause Long Term Problems?
« on: 6 Nov 2016, 02:41 pm »
I am curious if it is ok to press the mute button on my receiver and leave that on or switch to a different input which has no signal into the receiver?  The TV input from my Comcast box will play all the time hrough my speakers if I don't mute or switch input selections.  Don't ask.... it is just the way I had to set the system up from the cable box.  One issue I see with muting the TV input is that the volume setting number flashes the whole time.  I am not sure if that causes any problems to the lcd OR specifically if having a signal that actually comes into the system not being transmitted is somehow worse than no signal being received at all?

Oh, and I leave the unit on all of the time and I cannot change the input to with the Comcast remote but I can mute it.  Just trying to simplify the remote situation as much as I can.

Thanks,
James

Yes, it will cause problems.  If you forget to unmute it you'll go crazy thinking your system is kaput.....

Well, since it reads "MUTING" in large letters across the from of the receiver that should not be an issue.

So is this just a stupid question? I thought someone on here would have an answer.

Sorry, not knowledgeable enough to speak to the base mute question, but a thought for a part-time work around. I'm on limited basic cable, and in the 900s there are numerous music channels. I'd think you have them as well. Check around for something that suits your taste, lower the volume, and have background music for at least part of the time you'd normally mute. There is a screen display of the channel, artist, and album, so it wouldn't black out the screen.

As to an alternate input with no source, can't see how that would create an issue, other than having the gear on all the time and the subsequent heat issues. Depending on access you could always pull the power on the cable box, or the output coax to your receiver when not watching ? Of course pulling the power will require the box to re-sync when plugged in again. Good luck finding the solution that works for you.

I had what I believe to be a very similar problem.  I didn't want the TV sound so I went into the TV's settings and selected audio to only output to external.

This had two results I had to deal with:
1) I used the external to one of my preamp inputs
2) I then used another TV out (bluetooth, I think) to an external sound bar

Not my most desirable because I didn't want to buy a sound bar, however, the internal speakers on the tv suck pretty bad (totally worthless!).  So I was gonna eventually install the sound bar anyway.

So for tv movies I played through my stereo and for everyday tv shows/news I played through the sound bar.   I simply turn on the one (stereo or sound bar) I'll use for the content we happen to be watching.

If left on for more than about hour the MUTE sound will begin to imprint on the system, causing a ghost sound when you return to normal operations.

I have a receiver that also flashes MUTE but found no change in sound.  After long term use, it did however corrupt the display so that it now flashes MOOT.  Because more people than you would expect don't know the difference between these words, it's probably a mute point.   ;)

Depends on how the circuitry that is doing the Muting is designed.

Do you have a schematic of the volume/mute circuitry?

I do not have one but could probably find one online.  I would not know how to read it though to determine if there is an issue one way or the other.
