I will be receiving my VMPS line-up on Monday (a day earlier than I expected).  It'll take a couple of days to get them dialed-in but after that, mi casa es su casa.  Anyone from the area (Wisconsin) wishing to do an audition, please feel free to PM me to set it up.  I'll gladly open my home to you!

I am jealous!

Which Franklin, WI?  Jackson, Sheboygan, or Milwaukee?

I am in the Minneapolis area - depending on what models you are getting, I may want to take you up on that offer.

Regards,

David

Give your system some time to break in. Those ribbons will go through a HUGE change that I can only describe as going from grainy to smooth. I wouldn't even try adjusting anything for a while. If you're a tweaker (like me) this will be slow toture.

I recently got some RM30's for mains and my RM2's were to be moved to the back of the room for surround duty. I did a little side by side listening just to hear the differences in models and the RM2's sounded much "smoother" and more musical. Of course now the RM30's tromp on the 2's.

Campindog,

"Ditto"

When I received my RM40s, I spent the better part of 2 weeks playing with the settings - eventually getting them "at their best".  Unfortunately, my Thiel CS-3.5 speakers trounced them every which way.

But I persevered, as I expected their sound to change quite a bit during their break-in period.  I was right.  Over the next 5 - 6 weeks, the sound just got worse and worse.  Why?  Because my "settings" (both putty and potentiometers) were no longer valid for the new sound.

Therefore, I re-applied all putty, put the potentiometers back at 12:00 noon, and started over.

This time, I was much more knowledgeable at how to go about VMPS tuning, and resulted in a very drastic improvement.  From this point forward, any comparisons with the Thiels becomes a "no contest" in favor of the RM40s.

Jim,
Lessons I learned - you can use during your initial tuning adventures:
1) Finding the best location for the speakers within the room is more important than any other tuning effort.
2) Be patient and trust your ears.  Don't second-guess yourself by asking questions such as "I wonder what Brian would think of this sound".  Once you have them sounding their best to you, you are done with major tuning.
3) Prepare that you will likely have to go through the process more than once.  Which leads me to:
4) Do not discard any putty you remove - you might need to re-apply some of it after break-in.

Congratulations, and good luck,
Kevin

Thanks fellas.  To recap, I am getting RM-40s for mains, LRC for center, Ribbon Dipole (with FST) for surrounds that I will tripole with my floorstanders, and two New Larger Subwoofers (front --- with upgrades and rear --- base).

Franklin, WI is just outside of Milwaukee.  I look forward to seeing you guys soon....

I'd like to say that my RM40s sounded great out of the box.  Although my dealer came and set them up a few weeks after I received them, I still thought they were outstanding right from the beginning.

Sounds like a really impressive setup.

Is this intended to be a dedicated HT system, or will you also use it for 2 channel and multi channel audio?

What source and amplification?

I'm in Brookfield, and I'd really enjoy a chance to pay a visit. Are you taking on a dealership, or just generously offering to demo your system.
