Campindog,
"Ditto"
When I received my RM40s, I spent the better part of 2 weeks playing with the settings - eventually getting them "at their best". Unfortunately, my Thiel CS-3.5 speakers trounced them every which way.
But I persevered, as I expected their sound to change quite a bit during their break-in period. I was right. Over the next 5 - 6 weeks, the sound just got worse and worse. Why? Because my "settings" (both putty and potentiometers) were no longer valid for the new sound.
Therefore, I re-applied all putty, put the potentiometers back at 12:00 noon, and started over.
This time, I was much more knowledgeable at how to go about VMPS tuning, and resulted in a very drastic improvement. From this point forward, any comparisons with the Thiels becomes a "no contest" in favor of the RM40s.
Jim,
Lessons I learned - you can use during your initial tuning adventures:
1) Finding the best location for the speakers within the room is more important than any other tuning effort.
2) Be patient and trust your ears. Don't second-guess yourself by asking questions such as "I wonder what Brian would think of this sound". Once you have them sounding their best to you, you are done with major tuning.
3) Prepare that you will likely have to go through the process more than once. Which leads me to:
4) Do not discard any putty you remove - you might need to re-apply some of it after break-in.
Congratulations, and good luck,
Kevin
