BDP-1 and MPD DLNA or Squeezelite
« on: 15 May 2016, 03:16 am »
Would there be any reason why MPD, DLNA or Squeezelite would sound different from each other through the BDP-1?  If so, which would technically sound better?  There are some nice user interfaces for Squeezelite and DLNA.

A number of people have mentioned there are, but what matters is what you like.  If your interested in using one of the other methods you should give them a spin and see for your self  :thumb:

I have tried MPD, DLNA and Squeezelite and prefer the sound of MPD, followed by DLNA (Minimserver with UPnP) with Squeezelite my least favourite.

I do like the fact that Squeezelite allows me to use the Squeezebox controller from my SB Duet, and the SB apps - but I tend not to use it for anything other than background listening.

I'm just wondering why these would sound different.  Do they actually deliver different data to the DAC (ie. not "bit perfect")?

The differences couldn't be attributed to slight differences in gain perhaps?

Does MPD add gain?

The MPD sound is excellent.  I have only used squeezelite with Roon, and it sounds really good too.

I've experimented with Shairplay, Squeezelite and DLNA Renderer (a lot) and I agree: MPD sounds noticeably better than anything else and betters the sound from my MacBook Retina into the same components.

I am not that familiar with MPD, but it does support replay gain, so i would say yes it does support gain adjustment.

Technically, that is correct, but the default settings on the BDP disable Replay Gain with MPD playback. In most cases, anyway, Replay Gain will actually lower volume to match other albums/songs.
