New Cubed amps with electrostatic speakers?
« on: 16 May 2016, 02:31 am »
Are the new cubed amps recommended for use with electrostatic or planar speakers (e.g. Martin-Logan, Sanders, Magnepan). Can the new amps handle the very low impedance of electrostats at higher frequencies?

TIA

Hi TIA

It depends on which amp and the specific load but yes all Bryston amplifiers can handle the low impedances of the planar type speakers.

I have used our amps on Quads , Sanders and many versions of Magnapan without issues.  In fact Magnepan uses our amplifiers in their factory demo room and at major audio shows.

Thanks, James. That's reassuring. I am thinking about upgrading my aging (but still wonderful) 3B and ML SL3s to a 4B Cubed and possibly a pair of Maggie 1.7is or 3.7is. I don't think I can do the jump to 4Bs and Sanders speakers all in one go. Do you think the 4B3s can drive the 1.7is or 3.7is adequately or do I need to go to a pair of 7B3s? (The room is about 20 x 12.). I am also considering Bryston As for an almost all Bryston system, but I assume  that the amps will work with those!

As a M-L owner, I noticed that you conspicuously said nothing about the new Cubeds with them. I suspect there is a reason for that.

Thanks.

Hi

Yes the 4B Cubed works well with the 1.7 and the 3.7 - we have a number of customers with that combination.  My vote is for the A's of course (especially A1 and A2) but thats obviously my bias.  I know  a few people with ML and have not heard of any issues so far.
