Blu Tak
« on: 28 Apr 2016, 11:18 am »
New speakers will be here soon.  My stands are ready.  I have noticed people talk about using Blu Tak to affix speakers to stands.  Can anyone comment on their experience doing this? I have kids and cats.  The cats like to jump up on top of the spearers sometimes.  My current speakers have a couple screws that hold them to their stands.  I'm worried about the stability of the new ones.

Thanks.

Blu Tak (Fun Tak from Walmart is cheaper) won't secure your speakers against kids/cats.  In fact it can in time leave a residue so some put clear plastic wrap between it and adjoining surfaces.  The purpose of the Blu Tak is to acoustically couple the speaker to the stand, not "glue" them together.

I've had small cats knock speakers off their stands twice.  The second incident involved very light weight borrowed speakers and it only took the cat until the first morning to try jumping on top of them resulting in a very small nick on one corner (fell onto carpet).  In the first case my 10" x 10" x 20" speakers were on 12" stands and broke one of the binding posts.

Blu Tak (as was noted by JLM) will not securely hold your speakers to your stands... however it is sticky enough to prevent them from easily sliding off your stands (it sort of limits or helps prevent lateral movement).  I've had better luck with something called 'Quake Hold', which you may also find generically called museum putty.  It seems to have more adhesive properties than Blu Tak.  It's popular and readily available here in Southern California at hardware stores.  Even 'Quake Hold' may not be strong enough to secure your speakers to your stands when impacted by cats or kids, but it is cheap and worth a try.

None of my stand mount speakers are going anywhere without the stand accompanying them.  I use three good sized blobs of blu tak under each one - think ping pong ball size.

What you will find is that over time the consistency of the blu tak changes from being relatively easy to keep in a ball to coming off on your hands a bit. I do suspect that's exacerbated by our dry hot climate in AZ, but eventually this happens everywhere.

Surface residue is somewhat dependent on the surface. The black piano gloss on my LS-50's is pretty impervious, whereas matte and light colored surfaces will be more inclined to show after a period of time.

All in all, I find blu tak highly preferable to screws or spikes and more effective than using grippy rubber type sheet product for coupling. Some folks want to go the the way and de-couple, but that does leave stand mount speakers vulnerable to accidents.

I've used Museum Putty and several months back traded the speakers and moved the stands to another system with no issues and the putty was on for almost 2 years - http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ready-America-Museum-Putty-Collectors-Hold-99111/202214382?cm_mmc=Shopping%7cTHD%7cG%7c0%7cG-BASE-PLA-D25H-Hardware%7c&gclid=CMumnYn9scwCFRY7gQodpu0Oyg&gclsrc=aw.ds
