7B SST2 Internal Lights
« on: 17 Mar 2016, 02:52 am »
Received my 7B SST2's from Audio Advisor this afternoon.  I noticed one of the pair has color changing led's inside.  Should this be true of both?  They were sold as Demos.

To clarify, both have led's on the front that cycle through colors.  One of them has a second led on a chip inside near the center of the chassis (top) that also cycles through colors.  Right now it's green.  The other amp does not seem to have this led. It may be that they are different generations of the 7B SST2 and what I am seeing is normal.  I just wanted to be sure that there was not a problem.  I would post a picture, but the amp is black in a shadow, so a 25 s exposure is needed.

Hi Michel

Can you given me the serial numbers and I will check.

Hello Sir,

From the Final Checkout sheets that came with the manuals 003166 and 002612.

OK checked and  - the lower serial number has a slightly different soft-start circuit than the higher serial number.

All else is identical.

What changed with the soft start circuitry? Would there be any advantage to having that upgraded on the older unit?

No need to change - the new unit draws a little less power at idle.

Just for clarification, you are talking about the older serial number vs newer serial number SST2s as discussed in this thread and not comparing SST2s to the new cubes?

Correct - on the Cubes the light is on the back

So one of the soft-start circuits has led's and the other does not?

Hi Michael

Yes that is correct - the earlier serial numbers did not have the LED status indicator .  It became a requirement of the certification police and we had to design it in to our amplifier circuits.

I assume this was implemented across the board on all the amps then (not just the 7's) at a certain date in the SST2 series? If so, what year? My 28SST2s are newer than my 7B-SST2s however I don't see a LED by looking down through the top cover through the vents on either my 28s or 7's. At least I don't think I do unless it's quite hard to spot that way. I recently had the top covers off my 7's and never noticed any additional LEDs aside from the LED on the front faceplate.

I really am not sure - without having to go back and check through all the files.  It does not affect performance.

It is very noticeable if they are in the amplifier as in the dark you will see them glowing inside.

I have a pair of late model 3B2's (2014), and they have the status LEDs incorporated on the circuitry.

Must be a really late 2013 change or a 2014 change. My 28s were purchased in the fall of 2013. My 7's, although just purchased last month were built in 2011 and 2012 and only recently, last November released to the dealer network to be sold.
