Exogal Comet and Comet Plusbs
« on: 17 Mar 2016, 07:48 pm »
Underwoodwally is having a sale on Exogal dacs. There seems to be only a few AC posts about Exogal but all, I believe, are positive. Does anyone have any new thoughts or experiences with the Comet or Comet Plus? Or, more importantly, thoughts as to why one shouldn't go with them. Noaudiophile gave them a big 2015 Product of the Year thumbs-up!

Thanks,
Lester

Walter is passionate about his gear and a pure salesman (not a slam on either count).

Note this is a DAC/preamp and is intended to be used that way.  The reviews are very supportive: warm, analog, musical, well-balanced.

It uses FPGA technology (like Chord).  It's American made and comes with a 5 year warrantee.

I'm always bugged when a product (like the Exogal) needs an extra cost, external power supply to sound it's best.

I agree about the power supplies
The principal's are from Wadia.
They just eliminated their distributors and heard they were going direct so I don't know how Wally fits in now.
I have seen them being the plus version as low as $1500  - 1800 when the dealer's were selling them off.
I seriously looked at it along with the Aqua La Voce. I see a couple of those used now too at good prices.

The Exogal Comet with uber power supply was on my short list of DACs, as was the Auralic Vega.  I was looking for used in the $1500 - $2k range, but didn't find any before stumbling onto the Gustard X20U, which I decided to take a gamble on (and I'm happy I did).  The Exogal (as well as the Vega) has several glowing reviews from reputable sources.

One of the things that appealed to me about the Exogal was the A/D input, which could make ripping vinyl an option.  The other thing that was a requirement for me was DSD capability.

I'm developing the opinion that DACs are a bit "horses for courses"--many/all of the new DACs are outstanding, but have slightly varying sounds.  There was a shootout recently by the San Francisco Audiophile Society which came to similar conclusions, i.e. no clear winner out of ~10 DACs varying in cost from $1500 to >$10k.
