Storing tube amp.
« on: 9 Apr 2016, 12:50 pm »
I have a tube amplifier I want to mothball. What is the best way to do so?
Pull the tubes or leave them in place? Wrap amp in plastic?
Will be stored in a closet so no temp swings or humidity concerns.
Thanks!

To keep the capacitors in good operating condition you should pull it out every six months to a year and power it up.  That means put it in your system and use it for a couple of days then you can put it back in storage.

I sell different brands of professional photographic flashes
which use capacitors from 100uF to 6400uf ((450V)
and all the manufacturers recommend that you exercise the capacitors
for  minimum of 10 minutes every three months.
I am not sure about air tight wrapping the amplifier,
might trap the moisture ???

Just clean the contacts with Deoxit and put it in a cardboard box. Leave the tubes in it. It'll be fine. For added assurance, get some silica packets to put in the box (for moisture protection)....just like manufacturers do. As others have said, make it easy to access so you can hook it up periodically and power it up. I think twice a year is the general rule. When you do so, be sure it is connected to a load of some sort, if you don't want to hook it up to your speakers.
