BDP-1 and UPnP support? And SP2 as DAC?
« on: 29 Jan 2016, 04:46 pm »
Hey Folks,

Did a number of searches of the forum, and I apologize if I couldn't find it, but does the BDP-1 support playback from UPnP servers? I'm running a MinimServer now that feeds an Oppo - curious if the BDP-1 also supports UPnP streams.

Secondly, I'm guessing the SP2 would be fine as a DAC for the BDP-1?

TIA Bryston folk...

The BDP-1 works pretty well with MinimServer, supporting good sound and gapless playback. I also use BubbleUPnPServer on a Mac Mini for OpenHome functionality; when combined with Linn Kazoo you get a nice solution for local library playback, as well as Tidal.

The embedded renderer has challenges with some ALAC and AAC files, so my advice is to use MinimStreamer, as well, and to transcode your AAC and ALAC files to WAV/24, but leave FLAC and MP3 files as-is.

Yes, but the least problematic use of the BDP-1 in my experience is to use it via connected hard drive or flash drive.  This is where it really shines.  The Internet radio is nice too.  The memory in the BDP-1 struggles to keep up when you try to do much at once.  I have mine hard wired via Ethernet over power, So it's not a wi-fi issue.  The software has been vastly improved, but unfortunately has outpaced the machine's hardware capabilities except for the basic features.  As a renderer it is so-so from my experience (flac).

If you are a JRiver user, check out the JRiver Id.  Can be used as a server and renderer.  $400 for 2TB version. (USB and HDMI outputs)

Your mileage may vary, as always. I use my BDP-1 as a DLNA renderer every day, over a Wi-Fi bridge (Apple Airport Express) and with 192/24 tracks.

It really works well, but to keep things hiccup free, you need to turn everything else off (except for MPD) and set a scratch drive. I agree, however, that MPD playback has the advantage for sound quality, but it still sounds quite good.
