Hypex DS1.2 + Passive Sub
« on: 21 Oct 2004, 06:48 am »
I'm hoping someone here can help me with my plan to couple the Hypex DS1.2 subwoofer module to a passive sub.

The Hypex digital subwoofer module is the DS1.2 shown on this page:

http://www.hypex.nl/

The Sub I want to couple it with is this one:

TBI also make an active version of this sub; but I believe the Hypex+Passive would be even better and also it's more cost effective.

Tks

I am not sure what you are trying to accomplish, can you expand a bit?

The TBI sub is very fast and therefore well suited to horn speakers. I could drive it with my Plinius with an active crossover in between or I could buy TBI's active version. To save space and money though I thought this Hypex module which is built for subwoofers would be just the ticket.

It's a digital amp which seems to be rated as powerful enough to drive the TBI sub. The TBI sub passive version, which I'm looking at, only has 5 way speaker binding posts and I believe this Hypex module is not in a concealed box but is open at the back with a panel at the front for the controls.

I was hoping someone might have experience with these modules and could advise the best way for me to attach and connect it to the back of the TBI.

Perhaps I should contact someone at TBI about this. Maybe they'd even be willing to attach the module for me if I sent them one.

I use a Class D digital amp on the DIY subs I have built, and the amp I use is a plate amp also.  I simply built it into a separate box, and run wire from this, to my sub box...

Does that make sense?

Thanks Mark. That makes perfect sense. I guess I was over complicating things, thinking I could somehow physically couple the amp to the sub to make an active subwoofer; but why make life hard.

I'll do it the way you suggest.

BTW, how do you find the Class D with your Sub? and which amp are you using?

I imagine a high powered Class would provide some really clean power and control a sub well.

Thanks again

Well, if you have the room, it is the way to go - keep the amp away from the direct vibrations of the sub - should assist with longevity.

I use a BASH SAM300 unit, from this Canadian company, and have for about 2 years now.  http://www.bashaudio.com/samunits.htm

It is great, BUT I have little to compare it to.  It is the first sub amp I have owned, outside of a great little Yamaha YST sub I owned for a while, with a built in amp.

I bought the BASH unit locally, but they mostly cater to the OEM market, so it took a little chatting.

Fast, well controlled bass, with both my DIY subs.  Money well spent.

Thanks Mark,

I just realized the Hypex I was looking at is rated at 120w into 4ohms and the TBI Sub is rated at 8ohms, so I either need to wait for the more powerful Hypex Subwoofer amp modules, promised later this year, or I may go for one of your Canadian made Bash amps. I'm sure these are also excellent.
