The Hunger Games- ends with a whimper
« on: 24 Nov 2015, 07:57 am »
I won't claim that the Hunger Games franchise is high art but overall I found the movies to be pretty entertaining and enjoyable...until the last one.  I have to say it pretty much sucked.  I realize they had to tweak it a bit due to the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman but the film has bigger problems than that.  The characters take deus ex twists, contorted in a hamfisted way into tying up all the loose ends.  The result is very unsatisfying.  We get a conclusion but not really a resolution.  I didn't read the books so I don't know if they ended the same way but the film doesn't seem to do a very good job.  They just kind of run out of stuff to do.

If you've seen the other three I suppose die hard fans will need to see this one, too.  To everyone else I advise you not to bother.

I only saw the one (on Netflix a couple of months back) that is part 1 to the current movie.  I was hugely disappointed.  I thought the whole plot was a more modern better special effects version of 'The Running Man' with a slightly different plot twist.  With all the hype, I expected lots more I guess.

I thought the books were great, and filled with twists and turns.  I liked the ending in the book.  I have not seen the movie, though.

Having daughters, and having seen the first 3, there is a 0% chance I don't see this one.

I will report back once I have.  I found the 1st movie good, but it weakened from there for me.  My girls LOVE them all.  Their Star Wars I suppose, given their ages and my own in 77-82 etc.

You just may not be the target demo. My gf loves the sh*t out of these movies. She felt the ending made some missteps compared to the book - some dramatic beats were too perfunctory. Also it sounds like maybe the last book would have been a bit too much for the film budget to pull off accurately. Frankly Hoffman wasn't doing all that much in the previous films so I don't feel like we missed out on too much except for the 'letter' scene they cobbled together.

I'm not the target market but I will say I enjoyed the other films. This one just didn't work for.  In order to tie up all the plot points the characters had to act in ways that aren't consistent with what we know of them. That kind of feels like cheating, especially the contortions they needed to perform to resolve the "love triange" with Kat and the two guys.  They really had to alter the character of one of them a lot to clear the field for the other one and to me it felt very forced.  Really the whole film felt like they either just ran out of things to do or intended to do more but ran out of film.

Probably a must-see for fans of the books and completists but casual film buffs may want to just hit Star Wars instead.
