JVC QL-Y55F tweaks
« on: 4 Nov 2015, 10:37 am »
Hi everybody. I am a newbie in this forum. Lately I bought a beautiful JVC QL-Y55F. I've checked this forum for all great ideas, and got a good picture how to continue with sending this turntable to the star sound. But all of reactions are quite old, so is there anybody having this TT? I'm interested in all good new ideas how to dig all the best of this machine. But especially I'd like to know, if anybody is aware of effective mass of straight tonearm, which comes with it. I'm trying of course to find the best cart match for it. With TT came Technics EPC 207, which I don't like. On my first TT I use SHURE V15 III with Jico SAS, which looks as good fit for y55f. Thank you guys for answers.

Hi Krajta, welcome to Vinyl Circle home to the turntable fanatic.

Very nice table, congratulations!
While I don't have a Y55F, I can tell you it has a low mass servo controlled arm and is suitable for a wide range of med/high compliance carts.  Your V15 III/SAS will be fine on the arm.  The arm damping feature will compensate for some mismatches, but this seems like an ideal combo.

If you need an owners or service manual, they're available here - free download:

Hi Neo,
Thank you for your answer and welcome. With regards to servo controlled arm, I know that, I was just trying to find out exact mass, but even uncle google doesn't know  I'm going to use my SHURE, until find something better. For now, I consider Grado reference platinum v1, with weight 6.5 g and compliance 20cu. I was also thinking of Grado platinum v2, but it is heavier, 10 g, so v1 looks like better match. Another possibility could be Goldring 1042... Will see. Later I'll probably show of with some pictures and findings about pimping up the machine. Thanks for the link to manual, can come handy  :)
Bye
David

David,
IMO, people tend to put too much emphasis on matching mass and compliance.  While this should not be ignored and gross mismatches should be avoided, it's only one factor among many in determining SQ.  There are carts which seem to do better with an arm/mass which results with a res freq. outside of the recommended range with un-damped arms.  You might be better served looking at combos people prefer with the table, although low cu carts + low mass arms should be avoided.

I think your arm mass is approx. 10g, but you probably know better than I.  If you really want to know, you could get a test record and cart(s) of known compliance, defeat the damping and find the res freq.  Take the info to VE database tools and solve for arm mass.  You should also keep in mind, this is an approximation.  Carts vary from spec and arm mass can be manipulated to some extent.  You could add weight to your headshell to increase eff mass.   I don't think you would have a problem with any of the carts you mentioned.  Which ones you prefer is a different story.
