Mods to my Panny RP-91 - thanks Wayne

First off, I wanted to thank Wayne for doing such quality work and for the fast turnaround.

I contacted Wayne and asked him how he could improve my Panny RP-91 for a certain amount of money as well as fix a broken coax digital out connector.

Wayne decided that it would make sense to modify the RP-91 in the following way:

Quote
I replaced the main power supply cap with a Black Gate "Power Tank". I also replaced about 10 other caps in the power supply with high grade Panasonics. I replaced the component video coupling caps with "NX" Black Gates. I replaced the power inlet with a Furutech Rhodium Plated IEC. I replaced the audio digital output connector with a Canare RCA. The WBT and Cardas were too big to fit in the space. I also replaced a cap in the digital circuit with "NX"series Black Gate. I added some more dampening material to the chassis.

I am still in the process opf breaking things in, but there is a definite improvement in the picture produced.  Colors are more vibrant and looks cleaner.  I feel that this was money well spent on a unit I already liked a lot.

I am now yet another very happy Bolder Cable Company customer.

The RP-91 was supposed to be a pretty good deck to begin with. But I'm not surprised that some better parts are making a noticeable difference.

If I had any room in my Pioneer DV-AX10 I'd probably have Wayne do something similar to it. But there's certainly no room for Blackgates, nor room for anything else.  :( I couldn't even fit a sheet of Dynamat in the damn thing! :o

Enjoy the 'new' RP-91...

Sounds like a nice mod. Any rough estimate for this kind of work on any DVD player?

Thanks for the comments George. I am glad you are enjoying the mods.

Bubba,

Here you come to the heart of the problem with modding some players. There is just no room to use "Audiophile" approved parts. In George's DVD the BlackGate PS cap wasn't too bad but trying to get the BlackGate coupling caps in the video circuit... Let's just say I have a good sized shoehorn I used a lot on this unit. :)

Sa-dono,

A lot depends on how much room is in the player , the circuit layout, and the quality of parts. I used all BlackGates in George's machine were they would fit. That does raise the price some. I would throw out a ballpark price of $250.00 to $400.00 for similiar mods to most players.

Please feel free to contact me and send me a machine for a more precise estimate. Or you can do as George did and send me the machine and a price you are willing to spend on mods and I will let you know what can be done.

Wayne,

Were the mods on George's RP91 everything that could be done or were you working within a certain price point?  I'm just wondering how crazy you could get in regards to picture quality.

My HDTV only accepts component connection.  This may be a good way to get me close to the new upscaling players for video quality.

How long does it normally take for you to do the mods?

Thanks,

Rob

Rob,

Power Supply upgrades and changing out the coupling caps are about it on the RP-91 to keep it looking stock.

If you don't mind empty holes on the back, the stock jacks can be removed and WBT NextGen panel mounts can be installed elsewhere on the panel. Bybee Slipstream Purifiers can be installed in the video lines and the AC lines.

Depending on parts availability, I should be able to mod a unit within three weeks.
