Penny Dreadful

So I recently got HBO canada on a package deal and it includes an On Demand Netflix like app for going back and playing entire series and what-not.  It also include a movie network channel that includes Showtime show as well, which is a nice benefit.   I recently finished a binge of Penny Dreadful.

Its a superbly casted series.  The acting is superb.  The visual aspects are fantastic.  I won't go into a lengthy explanation as imdb would do a better job, but its essentially the culmination of all the various gothic stories of the 1800s (Van Helsing, Vampires, Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, etc).  It manages to bring all of these characters together in a non-cheesy way.

Highly recommended.  :thumb:

Other series I've been enjoying:
Ballers
True Detective
Vikings (Love love love this one)
Hannibal
The Brink

Haven't started on Ray Donovan but it's on my list.

Hey Josh. Some of those are on our list as well.

Vikings - agree completely
Ballers - not looked into that yet
True Detective - 1st season was awesome, second was confusing and lost most of the audience
Hannibal - last season was downhill, this season lost me, I think it is cancelled now
The Brink - not looked into it

and don't forget ...

Orange is the new Black - worth watching and keeping with
Breaking Bad - I'm almost done with season 4 now, stick with it
House of Cards - great show
Boardwalk Empire - really good
Game of Thrones - obviously
Newsroom - great show
Carnivale - old show but definitely worth seeing
Hell on Wheels - great show

these are Showtime, and pretty good if you can get them

Homeland - great show
Shameless - it is addicting in its depravity
The Borgias - great show

Agree with:
Hell on Wheels
Homeland
Game of Thrones
Orange is the New Black
Shameless
Breaking Bad (finished it a while ago)

Borgias was just ok for me, think I only finished season 1
Boardwalk Empire was amazing the first season....got tired in season 3 and haven't picked up again

Carnivale is on my list to watch

Others I really recommend if you haven't seen them
The Walking Dead....this one started off slow for me but I eventually got into it
The Bridge (pretty decent)
Sense8
The Americans
Orphan Black
Black Sails (only seen first season)
Dexter (first two seasons were probably the best ones)
Band of Brothers

I actually really liked Season 2 of True Detective but I had to rewatch a couple of the episodes to grasp it all.

Penny Dreadful caught me in the first episode and never let me go.  It has stellar, insightful dialogues.  Eva Green's acting, for me mixes reality and fantasy.  Amazing cast.

Yeah Eva Green is fantastic.   I really do think it is one of my favorite shows along with Vikings, at least at the moment.  Can't wait for Season 3.

I'll recommend Broadchurch season 1 and Bloodline to your list to watch on Netflix. Broadchurch is a murder mystery sort of like The Killing. Have not seen season 2 yet. Bloodline is a Netflix exclusive that I thought was well done, family issues kind of drama with a little murder case thrown in.

Love the Killing! Been watching Bloodline, but I am lukewarm on it thus far.   Will check out Broadchurch.

I like many of the listed shows here also.  Stand outs include Breaking Bad, True Detective, Sense8, Orange is the new Black (S1 and S2 only for me), Homeland and The Killing.

I might recommend a peek into:

Banshee (really loved S1, since it has been just "good")
Ray Donovan (lots of fun, but again S1 was great for me)
Mr Robot (still in S1, and is a strange one, but compelling for me)

It's amazing how people view or take in a show. Everybody responds differently. I loved season 1 of True Detective. Thought McConaughey was great and really loved how it was done and the tone or mood was so intriguing. Season 2 was a cure for insomnia for me. I just couldn't get into it but my coworkers loved it.

Sense8 seems to be getting a lot of attention but I didn't think much of it. It had a really interesting idea but it swayed away from it for too long for me. Whereas Bloodline I thought was really well done from the way it was filmed to giving you little glimpses into the future sort of like Breaking Bad would do and then you see how it got there. But some could say it was too slow.

You are so right. I thought Season 1 of True Detective was okay, but I REALLY LIKED Season 2. (After the first 2 episodes we did go back and watch them again before we continued.) And I've never been much of a McConaughey fan. I thought S1 & S2 of House of Cards were outstanding, but S3 was my cure for insomnia. However my coworkers thought S3 was just as good as S1 & S2.

Very cool that there are so many choices for us.

I liked both Season's of True Detectives, but they are very different, and I very much liked that.  The plot of the second show is way more intricate while I felt the first season had little to do with the overall plot as much as it did with the characters.

I heard  Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have signed on for season 3 of True Detective. They are going to investigate what the hell happened in season 2.

I've read a lot about Vince's performance being terrible, or at least not convincing, but to be honest, I think Colin Farrell's acting was over the top and I couldn't get past it.   For me he was way too exaggerated.

Hannibal is incredible (been watching since the 1st episode) and I like Penny Dreadful quite a bit.  Nicely cast, pretty good acting, and shockingly good special effects.

2nd season of True Detective was really bad.  I kept watching every Sunday in hopes of it getting better but it just didn't.  Story line had way too much going on to really flesh out in 8 episodes.  And Vince Vaughn should never have been considered for his role - really awfully cast.  He had his moments but they were so far and few between.
