Vinyl and CD to laptop.
« on: 3 Aug 2016, 10:23 am »
Hi all,
For the past two years, while working on my computer
or doing something else that doesn’t required lots of concentration,
I listen to ambiance music from my Grace Mondo table top Internet radio.
The station is called : Radio Art - Stress relief radio (96Mbps MP3)
feeding a 15 years old Sony receiver with bookshelves speakers and mini subwoofer.
The set up is near field, very near field, like 24’’ from my ears.
Right now I did not subscribe to Radio Art, so there are some advertising,
but very little and not really annoying.
As soon as I have a few $$$ I will subscribe, because it’s really inexpensive (6$/month)
without advertising and 24/7 none stop music.
They play different types of music (No vocal and that’s O.K. with me)
and what they play is 95% the type of music I like and the remaining 5%
is music that I don’t dislike.
Sometimes I wonder why I would spin vinyl or play CDs when I have music I like 24/7.
Plus, no wear out of the hard disk on my laptop.
However, I still have in mind of converting my vinyl to digital into my laptop,
for that I will buy the Behringer UAC202 at 30 USD.
For my CDs I was wondering what would be better,
use the Behringer with my Rega Apollo or put the CD directly in the CD’s laptop tray ?
When I have purchased and received the Behringer
I will ask members how to download the free J. River software or equivalent…
Waiting for advices, options, suggestions and recommendations.
Thanks in advance.

Using your laptop to rip CD's is the preferred method.  It provides a more direct connection to the HD and computers, being more powerful (faster, more memory) than a CDP, will do more re-sampling of the disc to get the best possible copy.

Guy13, I've done some ripping, regular and hi-res, with Easy Audio Copy.  Very easy to use.  Check it out.

I love the free Foobar for playback. (They playback FLAC files but not some other types.)

Am I understanding this correctly? Why would a laptop be more suitable to rip CD's/Vinyl than a desktop? For instance my desktop, built by me, i7 cpu, 32Gb RAM, and several hot swap-able capacity HD's making it much easier to add/remove storage.

Because that's what Guy is going to do - see original post. He's on a budget and I assume he's not going to be shelling out money for a background music system.

Hi all,
probably toward the end of this year my piggy bank will have enough $$$
to go ahead with my project of transferring my LP-CD to digital in my laptop,
however, I would prefer to store my music on USB key, it's like not putting
all your eggs in the same basket.
