DIY component ordering
« on: 25 Feb 2003, 01:17 am »
I am planning to mod ART DIO.  Also planning to buy a toroid to replace the wallwart.  JohnR has kindly (thanks) listed all the necessary parts that I would need on his website for the DIO mods.  Got me thinking.  How do you effectively order parts ? Those resistors, capacitors etc.  Do you order them according to your immediate needs or do you just order a bunch of a lot of components in various ranges ?  Shipping, waiting, realizing that you missed a resistor or cap might be frustrating, especially when you hot in the middle of soldering something, no ?

Karthi,

Depending on the vendor there may be minimum quantities. For resistors I always order at least 10 - unless they are something like Riken ($$$). If I need 15, order 20. Most of them are pretty inexpensive and it's always nice to have spares on hand.

Expensive stuff like large caps I tend to order just what I need but on small to medium sized ones I will often order a couple of spares. Depends on the price.

Of course if you don't plan on any other DIY projects there isn't much point in having extra parts on hand.

The shipping can be killer. Nothing like needing a $0.75 IC and having to pay a $5.00 handling charge plus $3.00 shipping.   I suggest buying as many of the components from the same vendor as possible to help reduce the shipping cost. The cost to ship 100 resistors is the same as shipping 1. The box weighs more than the parts. :(
