I've been listening to lossy iTunes files from my iPhone 4 through my wadia 171i coaxial digital into my bda1 DAC. I also use the digital out on my Sony xa5400es CD player. The highest readout I get is 44.1.

I just downloaded the free Onkyo high res music app. Apparently the premium 10$ version lets you serve up higher resolutions. Could someone tell me how to affordably get some free high res music. The BDA-1 is a quite capable DAC & it is a shame to not try to extract out of it the highest resolution possible.

When I had my BDA-1, I also had a modded Oppo BDP-83 (which did not require a handshake from HDMI) along with an HDMI audio de-embedder.  There's a very long thread here - http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=82217.0

I actually preferred taking 24/88.2 from SACDs (via HDMI into the de-embedder and then the coaxial digital out of the de-embedder to the DAC) and going into the BDA-1  The BDP-83 (still have mine in a spare system - I do file playback now and the only time discs get played is when someone else brings one and that might be a couple of times a year) also will pass full DVD-A (e.g. 24/192) resolution out of the coaxial digital output into a DAC.  I have been listening to 'The Beatles 1' on Blu-Ray.  In my main system my newer Oppo BDP-103D will only pass 48kHz via the digital out from the disc (I played the analog outs into the preamp to get full resolution).  The BDP-83 passed 96kHz which is what is on the disc.

Thank you for those resources.

I know people say iPods are limited but I find it very convenient to dock up & listen (even critical listening) through the Wadia 171i into the DAC. The authority & the detail can be quite startling @ times, even if the elocution of vocal lyrics occasionally is drowned out from all the strong textural information.

Having the ability to run an iPhone app to play lossless files (even if it is just an album or two at a time due to memory/storage constraints) would be great!

One thing an Oppo player can do is play files via an attached hard drive.  I have an old BDP-93 in the bedroom system with about 10,000 songs on a hard drive, including hi-rez (the BDP-93 can do up to 24/192) and the bedroom system feeds the outdoor speakers.  I have two Oppo 103Ds.  I just use it for video in the main system (have a music server and DAC) but in a spare system, I have a hard drive attached to the BDP-103D with many files including DSD and multi-channel DSD).  It's not the end all in 2-channel playback but it sounds quite decent (and for the money you have a superb Blu-Ray player too).  For the 103D, Oppo also has a media control App (for IOS - the older 93 has one for Android) so you don't need to use a display to select music (which comes in handy when I'm outside and can use my iPhone to select music).  In that spare system I have a 2-channel preamp with HT Bypass so if I listen to 2-channel music it is via the analog outs of the BDP-103D.

Don't worry about it, Hi-Rez is a myth.

I've taken the cd layer PCM 44.1 from an sacd, DSOTM, applied some love and magic to it. The PCM now sounds superior to the sacd and its still PCM 44.1. So 44.1/16 bit is sufficient sound quality when mixed well.
