Finally going to hear the VR-55
« on: 19 May 2015, 02:59 pm »
I have finally found time and opportunity to go meet Albert and listen to the VR-55.  I am very excited.  It just happens that I will get to meet a lot of other folks and hear a lot of other equipment while I am there.

Heading to T.H.E. Show Newport.

That's terrific!  How nice to have that kind of relationship with the "better half"!  Btw, Neiman Marcus is just a 15 min ride to Newport Beach, if necessary!

LOL  Great minds think alike.  I already made a call to my connection at Hermes.

What an experience...

The VR-55's are everything I had hoped and more.  It was very nice to get to hear several other speakers that I had considered in the same place.  While all in different rooms with different equipment, the 55's stood out as exceptional.

I am ordering a pair for sure.

It was also a pleasure to finally meet Albert and Lee.  Good times, Good Food and Great music.

These guys have a true passion for their craft.

Yup, those 55s are a night and day difference vs the 4 jrs, which are good but just not in the same league. The combination of reasonable size, good looks and sota performance makes them a home run IMO.  :thumb:

And you got to hear them with my Ultra speaker cables  :icon_lol:

Long story short - Albert was in a pinch and asked me if I could bring my cables to the show. Interesting thing is I got to compare the VR55s with the Signature cables and then with the Ultras - what a difference! As good as the Signatures sounded, the Ultras really opened up the sound coming out of the VR55s - smooth, spacious, very dynamic!

I made the same mistake as I did at RMAF....  I visited the VSA room first and heard the 55's...  Game over!  Later visited a couple of Wilson rooms, Magico, YG, Rockport, Evolution, etc... Not even close.  The 55's are in a class by themselves.  The paint color on this pair is special (Porsche high gloss metallic, Macadamia.  Just stunning.

Spent a 1/2 hour in the 55 room.  What an amazing speaker.  Soundstage was deep and wide.  Going to be hard to find anything better.  I made the mistake of going there first too :duh:.  Hard to listen to anything else.

I'd be interested in the opinions of those who have the opportunity to audition the VR-55 Actives ($60k) against similarly-priced competitive offerings, ie. Rockport (the Cygnus @$62.5k), Magico (the S7 @$58k), and Vivid Audio (the G1 @$68k).  Thank you!

Folks,

It's getting more and more tempting to start looking harder in getting a pair of these 55's!! Wish I was at the show. Speaking of shows, the 2015 Capital Audio Fest is coming to Rockville Md August 28-30. This is the 4th year and it is growing. A lot of audiophiles from the Baltimore/Washington area attend the show. Albert, if you are interested in a room, check out: www.capitalaudiofest.com. Would love to hear those 55's and meet Albert and company!

R, sorry I missed seeing you!  Several years ago you were kind and generous to open your home to Albert, myself and a potential buyer of mine for a few hours, interested in auditioning the VR9's in a SOTA set-up.  Hope you are well!!!  Jack

Hi Jack,

I do remember having you and Albert over.  I can't believe it's been 3 years.  I had a great time.  My system is the same, only change is a update of my DAC since you were here.  Anytime you are in Vegas, let me know.

Enjoy your 55's.

Rodney

Given the always present uncertainties of a show, I am so pleased that the 55s were able to shine. Really eager to see pics of the Macadamia finish. Sounds like I will have to do a compare of Ultra SPC with my Signature
