Audiophile Aluminum Chassis
« on: 24 May 2015, 05:30 pm »
Hi All,

I am working on a project that involves putting a Beaglebone Black into a nice looking chassis with a linear power supply and a toroidal transformer to see if I can improve the sound.  I am currently using a SMPS which sounds pretty good.  So I am looking for a good chassis/supplier and a good toroidal transformer to use.  Similar to this RPi2 setup "http://parttimeaudiophile.com/2015/05/23/review-raspberry-pi-2-as-music-streamer/".Suggestions are appreciated.

Best Regards,

I just used a LandFall chassis, very nice. Their units would allow separation from PSU and player. Also use an EI transformer, not toroid. The 185 series from Hammond has become a favorite along with the 229 (PCB mounted), depending on requirements.

Nice link... I'd like to think about going discless. But I would have to put an HD in it; and build a new DAC...

Hi Salis Audio,

Thanks for the reply!!  I will check out the Landfall chassis for sure.  I also want to look at the EI tranny you suggest.  Why the EI?

I am using the Beaglebone Black as a streamer for my PC which lives in the study away from my main listening stereo in the living room.  I haven't invested in a NAS yet so the PC is doing dual duties.  Maybe some day.  But that's what this hobby is about isn't it.  Evolution...

There are some interesting looking DAC options out there for RPi and BBB for sure.  I haven't heard any to compare though.  Hope you are enjoying a relaxing Memorial Day weekend.

Best Regards

The two I recommend have good regulation, and better noise control. I learned about Mark Levinson engineers entirely switching to them for line level gear. My experience is they are better as well, when possible. The 185 also is easy to mount and accepts quick connects.

185  and  229

Hi Salis Audio,

Thanks for your reply.  The Landfall aluminum boxes I looked at are solid and well made.  Thanks again.

Silverstone makes some very nice HTPC chassis. Perhaps this or one of their other models are what you are looking for.

Hi Salis Audio,

"Nice link... I'd like to think about going discless. But I would have to put an HD in it; and build a new DAC..."

I just noticed that the author in the link posted his "parts that I used" list in the comments section if you are interested.  I would like to go with made in USA parts if I can.

Hi Norman Tracy,

Thanks very much for your suggestions for a chassis.  I would like to use a vented box.  I will look at the Silverstone units.  Thanks again.

Best Regards,

Hi again Norman Tracy,

Coincidentally, last night I was reading a headphone article on another site "http://www.head-fi.org/t/767883/official-hifiman-he1000-impressions-thread/105#post_11633299" that displayed a nice looking Silverstone headphone stand.  I didn't put two and two together when I read your reply.  But I was just poking around the Silverstone site looking at the chassis options and there it is!  Thanks again for the link.

Best,

Hello Blu99zoomer,

I see you're looking for a aluminum chassis? An audiophile aluminum chassis?

Perhaps i can help you out with that...

Here's my project that involved my making my own aluminum chassis http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=128921.0

Kind regards,
