Suitable for SET?
« on: 31 May 2015, 01:46 pm »
Hi, Danny,

My first post on this board, but not on Audio Circle.

First, I didn't realize until perusing another thread that you are in a very hard-hit area of Texas. I am in Austin and my heart goes out to you and to yours. My place of employment is right across the street from a very full creek and we took some water damage. Further downtown in a part of the city with lots of small, local businesses, things were really underwater. But I know we haven't had it as bad as you have.

My question is whether there is,  in your speaker lineup, any model that would be suitable for a SET 300 B  amp.

Again, wishing you well.

I believe the 'Wedgies' would pair nicely with a 300B SET amplifier. Please see
Reply #285 of that thread. Danny mentioned that they... "almost hit a 94db
average output with just 1 watt". The question becomes ...are the kits still available?

The Wedgies would definitely be at the top of the list. They are out of stock though due to the sale of BG to Christy Digital. Hold tight though. They have promised to once again make the Neo drivers available to me soon. Soon has not been soon enough though. I really need to get the Neo's back in stock.

Amen to that. I could do with 3 N3S's and a pair of Wedgies for builds people want me to do for them. OK, full disclosure, 2 of the N3S's are for me. One to match my N3TL's and the other for my N1X's  :thumb:

That's a very cool design! When you were selling those, Danny, did you have flatpack cabinets to go with them?

The flat pack came with the kit.

Super-Vs   http://gr-research.com/super-v.aspx

Although no longer available as a kit you can directly purchase from Danny, they come up for sale from time to time. There was a posting not too long ago for someone selling the drivers and crossovers for the top portion: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=133815.msg1419721#msg1419721

I believe Srclose may have a single coax driver and crossover as well. The woofer and amps are available from Danny.

I am driving my Wedgies with a Bottlehead 2a3 amp (3.5 wpc), I have an ifi tube buffer in front of the amp adding 6dB gain.  Sounds great in my small room.  My V1s (predecessor to the Super V) are easily driven by the same amp without the additional gain in the same small room to levels higher than I would listen.

Also worth noting, with the Wedgies or the V series you may hi-pass your amp up to 200 Hz which reduces the load on the amp enabling it to play more cleanly and louder before clipping.

Best,
Ed
