Cleaning dust off drivers
« on: 1 May 2015, 06:11 pm »
Hi all,

We recently had contractors pull down some plaster, and there's a layer of construction dust all over my entire house - including, unfortunately, my Super Alnico XRS and the drivers.  Does anyone have a recommendation for getting dust off?  Compressed air?  Moist paper towel?  I'd appreciate thoughts before jumping in.

Thanks,
Oliver

I would suggest a soft brush, or a Swiffer duster, or something along those lines to get the dust off. I wouldn't use moisture if you can help it.

Or just play them super loud!

No moisture. I would a vacuum cleaner made for computers.

Lower suction than a household vac with longer bristles on the duster than household vac.

If you don't actually have a dustcap then compressed air will actually blow the dust and debris right into magnetic gap in the motor structure of the driver resulting in a real bad day.

There is no open gap.  I would suggest dry compressed air from a compressor (not canned air as they condensate very fast) using a blow gun but turn the pressure regulator way down so you don't have hardly any pressure, but just enough "wind" to get the dust off.  Be very careful as the whizzer cone is very delicate.

Vacuum carefully. Blowing off the dust just spreads it around. Do not use liquids on paper cones.

I would avoid anything crazy, especially if it involves any type of liquid. On my TAD woofers I'll use a camel hair brush occasionally. Not a miracle worker, but generally safe. "Three hairs and some air," as Bob Ross use to say, like you're painting those happy little clouds....

Hi lousyreeds1,

Sorry to hear about the dust, but no worry and thanks to all who posted.

I would use a vacuum only on the cabinet and finish off with a damp cloth to wipe away any remaining dust.

For the driver Canada Rob is correct with the compressed air with soft output.

This should do the trick.

Thanks again,
Louis
