Hi,

I recently purchased a used 5B-ST to power my fronts and centre. My Marantz receiver is powering the rear surrounds.

When I power up the amp, I hear a tiny bit of static/noise for 1 to 1.5 seconds. After that, the amp is dead quiet, runs cool, and sounds great. When I used my Marantz to power the fronts and centre, this noise/static issue never occurred.

As I have never owned a Bryston amp, I'm not sure if the static/noise at start up is normal. I have tried powering things up in different order (Marantz then amp, amp then Marantz) and different power outlets in the room but the noise issue is still there. The level is very low so I don't think it is an issue.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the mute relays - email Mike at Bryston - mpickett@bryston.com

Hi James,

Thanks for your reply. I sent an email as suggested.

Edit: By mute relays, I assume you mean that all sounds are muted when the unit is powered up, the amp stabilizes, then unmutes? I also noticed that my speakers make a tiny thump/noise when I power down the amp too.

Hi Henry

My guess is the relays are the issue but Mike is the expert.

I dropped the amp off at the Bryston office in Peterbrough and spoke with Mike.

He informed me that the slight bit of noise on start up or shutdown is normal for this particular amp. He wanted me to leave the amp to have it checked out anyway to make sure everything is working as it should. The slight bit of noise on start up and shut down is normal for my amp.

Got the amp back today and it sounds absolutely wonderful. The slight bit of noise on start up and shut down is normal for my amp.

Bryston service is top notch :thumb:
