Turntable advise.....please
« on: 29 Apr 2015, 07:44 pm »
After a few decades the seduction of vinyl beckons.  My CF pre is currently being fitted
with the RIAA adjustable MM/MC phono circuits.  The yet to be bought TT will sit on a
very solid antique piano bench on a carpet covered concrete slab floor.  Out of deference
to my cat I optimally want a TT supported by four feet that plays well with the dustcover
down.  The cat has never messed with my tubed equipment or speaker screens when
on or speakers when exposed but a spinning LP might be a teachable moment.  My
stereo is in the living room so TT placement will be within 2-4 ft. of Salk HT3 spkrs.
I listen at moderate levels of 60-80db.  My max budget is $2,000, preferably less.
I have been binging on youtube set-up videos and reading TT reviews.  Rega TT
checks a lot of  my requirements other than the three feet.  Could I put rubber
spacers almost up to the TT base under the back corners?  The Pro-Ject 1 Xpression
Carbon Classic looks nice, same three feet challenge, but I have read the Rega
is less susceptable to skating.  I would also like to avoid dangling anti-skate weights.
Vintage would appeal to me if I had some assurance I wasn't buying someone elses
problem and that there is an advantage compared to new.  Confusion reigns.
Any advice would be much appreciated, including I better call Frank quick.

Thanks,

gad-

Buy from here: http://vinylnirvana.com/vintage-turntables-for-sale/ with confidence.  I am selling mine shortly (going to ask $1500 or so (TD-160b with newish SME arm/Ortofon Cartridge ), but only becuase I am moving up to an AMG.  I love the Thorens he restored and I got to buy.  I wish my wife would let me keep both.  So if you want vintage, trust Dave.

Well I took my own advice and just talked to Frank.  I'm going to first
experiment with an inexpensive TT and separate phono pre.  If that works
out great.  I'll buy a nice TT and the Ava Vision Phono separate.  If the
proximity to my spkrs. in the living room proves problematic I'll move the
system to the den.  I hope not as this would require running a new dedicated
circuit but it would afford a perhaps more reasonable TT placement.  The
Ava Vision Phono separate enables running a much longer RCA connect
to the CFpre expanding TT placement possibilities.  Now if the cat will
just cooperate 8)

Buy a Dual 1219 or a 1229 from the 70s and a Shure M75 pickup. I did (1219).

The Tri Art Audio Pebbles TA-1 turntable looks interesting and it is within your budget.
