Bryston BP26 level
« on: 20 Jan 2015, 11:50 pm »
I use a BCD1 player and a BP26preamplifier with a Plinius Sa250ref amplifier.
The output level on the BP26 preamplifier is really loud. I can only use the volume knob on a 20° course and in normal use I'ts really difficult to adjust sound with the remote (too loud or too low...).
With another preamplifier model (Bel Canto Pre3) the level is perfect for a normal use beetwen 0 and 50 (on 100).
I've tried attenuators on XLR cables (rothwell attenuator)to lower the level but the dynamics decrease and there is really a lack of détails and extreme bass.
Is there a way to modify (internally) the output level on this preamplfier?
Thanks for your help

I'm not an expert on this and could be barking up the wrong tree.  The BP26 is designed to mate with gain settings of Bryston amps and will work great with most amps.  The gain on the 7BSST2 for example is 29db and there is a switch that can be used to attenuate gain by 6db to account for the difference between single ended and balanced. The SA250 Ref has a balanced gain setting of 38 db. and may be a mismatch with the output of the BP26 creating too much volume.  I don't know what your solution would be  but this may be the cause.

Also, I have noticed that many mass market CD's of newer vintage provide a signal that causes the volume on my BP26 to be excessive by 9:00 or so on the volume control and I'm using 7BSST2's.  Fortunately my Esoteric K-05 has an output attenuator that solves the problem nicely.  Does your problem exist on all recordings regardless of format?

Since you own both, how would you compare the sonic differences between the Bryston BP26 and the Bel Canto Pre3 in terms of resolution and clarity?

Thank you
