Wondering if anyone can comment on high preamp current.  I have the 4Bsst2 with PMC OB1i speakers and a VTL 2.5 tube pre.  I am looking at the BP17 and my dealer said it would be a significant upgrade as it has high current to feed the 4Bsst2 which is required to really make that amp sing  like it should (saying my pre doesn't have the current and isn't the greatest match). Any comments ?  I know high current is good in amps but haven't heard it discussed much in pre's.  Any comments.  And if it would be a noticable upgrade on my VTL based on these parameters

A pre-amp should certainly be able to adequately drive an amplifier, but it's usually a matter of voltage, not current. The most important things are low noise, and appropriate gain.

The VTL is a nice sounding pre for sure, but the BP17 beats it significantly in noise and distortion in both specs and sound. In fact, the distortion rating of the VTL is nearly an entire order of magnitude higher than the Bryston. Also, you can run balanced output from the BP17 to the amps which reduces noise even further. Have you had the chance to hear it?

It seems to me that the high impedance of the power amplifier inputs (60K Ohms unbalanced / 20K Ohms balanced) would be the limiting factor of the amount of current that could flow.  I think good current output capability of a preamplifier might really only come into play when trying to drive an amplifier through very long interconnect cables.

If I'm wrong about this, please let me know why.

Haven't heard the BP17 yet, no.  It's a dealer that I trust and this was his recommendation.   He is someone out of town that I deal with
