I've gone through a lot of downsizing over the past few weeks (new place with half of the square footage) and it has completely changed the direction I was heading with my 2 channel system. First off, I lost my listening room. Second, I lost my home theater (no space for it in the new house so I bought a Monitor Audio ASB-2 soundbar which is actually fantastic). Now I'm forced to put all of my attention into my home office rig which is actually quite fun, but I need a bit of help thinking through the next steps I need to make.

First order of business: Front End

Since the release of Tidal, it has completely changed the way I listen to music. No more CD's because I'm just streaming now and the quality is great. I have a Squeezebox Touch and I'm running Tidal through a third party app (ickstream). I was running the Squeezbox Touch into my Oppo 105D for conversion via the optical outs, then into my Rogue Audio Perseus Tube Preamp and finally off to my Rogue Audio Stereo 90 Tube Amp. I'm selling the Oppo 105D because I'm literally using only one of it's features in my system, the DAC. I believe I can put that money into a far better DAC. Here's what I need help thinking through.

Is there a better way to run my front end? The Squeezbox Touch is fine but I'm sure there is a better source to run Tidal from, or is there? I'm not using the analog outs on the SBT, just the optical out. Should I focus on a DAC and leave the SBT where it is or should I ditch the SBT for something else that I don't know exists?  I know there are a few aftermarket power supplies available for the SBT but would it help sound quality wise if I'm only using the digital outs? What I am trying to accomplish is better sound from my source. I have $1K to work with. Oh and I should mention that I have both my iMac and Macbook Pro in my office that I can use if that helps with any suggestions.

Second order of business: Back End

I need a new amp or monos. I can't fit the Stereo 90 on the Ikea shelf that my electronics live on now because the Rogue is 60lbs and just completely dominates the shelf. I also need them to be no more than 12.5" wide and 15.5" deep. This eliminates most if not all of the brands I am familiar with. My speakers will be the Philharmonic Audio Slims. Here are some specs:

Cabinet   Custom Cabinet
Tweeter   RAAL 64-10 OEM
Midrange   Tang Band Titanium W4-1337SD
Woofer   Seas L16NX 6"
Frequency Response   35Hz - 20kHz (+/- 2db) Anechoic
Sensitivity   85 dB (dB/2.83v/1M)
Box Alignment   Folded Mass Loaded Transmission Line

I won't be playing these loud in my small office but I want to make sure there is enough power to control the speakers at lower listening levels. I'd like to go with solid state amps too. My sound preference is always romantic, engaging, and punchy. Again, the biggest thing here is that they fit into my Ikea shelf. I'd love some recommendations! I have about $1K here as well.

Thanks in advanced guys! I already know the room is not ideal but it's what I'm living with now and I'm sure I can get a sound that I'm thrilled with.

Hello, Neep.

Until I saw your $1000 limit, I had considered offering my Sim Audio i3.3 integrated amp with DAC and phono preamp modules included. I was all set to recommend the Peachtree Audio Nova65SE but it is 14.8"W. The horror! It seems to me that Nuforce and NAD offer amps that are not in the usual cases that could fit the bill. There must be others out there. I assume there is no way you can mount it on the top of the Ikea unit?

Best of luck in your search.

Question for you: Can you speak more about Tidal? I've read about it, and I'm tentatively interested. HOW GOOD IS IT?  :icon_lol:

Hi Michael, thanks for chiming in! My budget is actually $2K, sorry for the confusion. $1K for the front-end and $1K for the amp(s) and it doesn't matter if money sways more towards one or the other as long as I'm within the budget. I'm totally open to an integrated amp too! I can absolutely fit gear on top but my preamp and turntable will be up there  :icon_lol:

Tidal for me is almost perfect. Lossless streaming, huge library, fantastic IOS app, it's phenomenal. The only thing I do not like is the price at $20/month.

I would look into Wyred4Sound amps, small with lots of power.

Would a small format piece work well I wonder?

There are some nice Peachtree DAC/PRE/AMPs out there that should fit the bill well.

The latest version of the Supernova is amazing, but over the budget.

Cyrus would be another brand I would consider, for an integrated.

Like the Wyred4Sound suggestion too.

How about Bel Canto.  There's a DAC 3 and M300 mono's on audiogon right now for under your budget.

+1 for Bel Canto.

Have you considered Parasound's Z series? It's effectively a 1/2 rack series, and they have discrete components - DAC, Pre, Amp. I wish they had a power conditioner in that format as well, but I think there are other manufacturers (Atlas, Furman) that build these. The 1/2 rack format is 11" wide and I think the shelves in the Ikea Expedit (which is what you are using) are 13" wide. The rack would fit perfectly and I think the silver components in the Z series look gorgeous.

The 1/2 rack format is 11" wide

Standard rack mount components are 19"W and half rack components are 9.5"W.  The Parasound Z components without the rack mount front panel are 8.5"W as are the Bel Canto components.

Although it was stated that listening levels would not be loud, I would still personally opt for bit more than the Parasound Zamp's 45W @ 8ohm / 60W @ 4ohm to pair with the 85dB Philharmonic Slim towers.

The ifi gear gets generally good reviews and might work for a compact front end. Those components plus a couple of used Ncore monoblocks would make for a nice two-channel setup.

I was incorrect in saying that 1/2 rack is 11". The Z rack is 11" wide.

Ah, I did not realize that the speakers were an un-changeable component, and that they were so low in sensitivity. You will certainly need more than the Z's power, unless you bridge two of them.

Ifi as well as Chord makes some small componentry. Personally, I think the Peachtree lineup is amazing. You should get a rosewood finish and keep it on top :)

Thanks for all of the input guys!

I ended up with a Wyred 4 Sound Dac-2 (w/ femto clock upgrade) and a pair of Wyred 4 Sound SX1000 mono blocks (570wpc @ 8 ohms). I sent my Rogue Perseus tube preamp in for the "Magnum" upgrade as well. They Wyred gear is very "hifi" sounding and more on the lean side so I'm hoping the tube pre brings the balance back. The SX1000's are also my first taste of Class D so I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about them, but heck do they fit on the shelf a lot better than my 60 pound tube amp  :o
