Help-Any BDP / Antelope Users?
« on: 11 Jan 2015, 12:41 am »
I am trying to get my BDP-2 to work correctly with my Antelope Zodiac Platinum DAC.  I seem to have great performance with the AES output, but would like to get my USB working so I can get DSD over DoP files playing.  Right now, I can get regular 44.1 files to play through the Zodiac, but I cannot get any sound when trying to play a .dsf DSD file.  The Antelope has two USB 2.0 speeds...I could only get the "HS1" variant to play, which goes up to 192K.  I couldn't get the "HS2" configuration to play correctly, which is USB 2.0 up to 384.  A few questions:

Is anyone else successfully using a BDP with the Zodiac Platinum?  If so, are you able to play DSD files?  Also, has anyone gotten the "HS2" USB mode to work?

Anyone have any ideas on what the issue might be?

Thanks!

I'm not sure about your dac, but the BDP must be told that your dac is DSD capable before it will attempt to play DSD files.  Page 15 of the manic moose manual has more on this.

Cheers

Hi Chris,

If I understand correctly from the manual, I just need to check the Zodiac DAC in the audio devices setting and hit apply?  I have tried that a few times, and rebooted, etc.  Is there something else I missed?  Thanks for the help!

Chris, one more thing.  Based on the description for USB modes in my DAC manual, do you believe I should be able to use the "HS2" setting?  Here is a cut and paste:

There are 3 available USB operation modes:
● FS1 – USB Full Speed Mode (12Mbits) for backwards compatibility. Supports sample rates
up to 96 kHz.
● HS1 – USB High Speed Mode (480Mbits). USB Audio Class 1.0. Sample rates up to 192
kHz (default).
● HS2 – USB High Speed Mode (480Mbits). USB Audio Class 2.0. Sample rates up to 384
kHz.

The following is from the BDP-2's website: 'USB output requires S1.70 firmware or greater and a DAC that supports standard class 2 USB audio drivers'.

I'd look into the firmware of the BDP and check if it's up to date as both devices' USB ports should be compatible with the class 2.0 (HS2) standard.

Nice pick on the DAC BTW, I'm currently thinking about going either the Antelope way or purchsing a BDA-2 (maybe 3) with a matching Bryston pre.

tatcom-thanks for weighing in on this.  I am with you on the 2.0, but thought that USB 2.0 was anything beyond 96K (I believe limit of USB 1.0 audio).  The confusing thing to me is that Antelope is claiming two speeds of 2.0, which is what is confusing to me.  I have the latest firmware installed to my knowledge (10/7).  I am not sure what else to try to get the HS2 mode to work.  I am wondering if not being able to get the HS2 mode is keeping me from getting DSD over DoP (although, HS1 speed supports to 192K-which should be good to go for DSD over DoP).

Thanks Chris.  Seems like I am having some other, unrelated issues.  Will take you up on this offer when I get that worked out.  I verified that the DAC worked via USB and my PC, so we have some issue to wade through.  I will let you know-thanks for weighing in on this.

Hi Chris,

I had some other things in the system go amiss, it is back up again.  I seem to still have issues with no DSD over DoP, and now another issue is that I seem to be getting occasional pops/skip sounds when listening through USB (AES is fine).  Any ideas why I am having the issues only with the USB?  Any ideas why I am getting the occasional momentary pop-out?  It makes some noise when skipping songs (not present in AES), but more importantly, the occasional blips are getting annoying.  My PC system playing jriver seems to go without these issues I am having on the BDP.

On a related note, the DAC makers (Antelope) tell me that they say their system is not Linux compatible (even though it sounds great on 44.1 other than the blip events).  Any path forward with this setup that you can see?  Let me know if you want it in service mode, and how to do it and I will oblige.  Thanks!

Continuing to get frustrated...this combo sounds so good via USB when I am not having this momentary pops!  Does anyone know the Linux distribution and version that the BDP-2 runs on MM?  Antelope is trying to help me from their end, and has requested this info.  The PC works great with the DAC, but not giving up the fight to make the BDP-2 work, as I really want to keep this thing vs. dealing with a PC setup.

Well if you place it in service mode i can check things like resource usage and if mpd is reporting any errors with the USB interface.  This might be an issue best resolved with a phone call though, depending on whether or not the skips/pops get logged or not.  USB DAC's have been hit or miss, like ours BDA-1, BDA-2 and BUC-1 and some third party DAC's all work fine, but a few like the Berkley Alpha USB have been causing problems.

Hi Chris,

The MPD system log has a bunch of the following errors stacked up:
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1401:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card
Feb 03 04:49 : alsa_output: Failed to open "Zodiac Platinum-10" [alsa]: Failed to open ALSA device "plughw:1,0": No such file or directory

Any hints?  Would you be kind enough to PM me what I need to do to get you to see my service mode unit?

Page 24 of the manic moose manual covers this

http://www.bryston.com/PDF/Manuals/BDP-2_MM_Manual.pdf

And my email

Sounds like the software meant to enter the USB DAC's into the config files isn't using the correct values to address the dac or the dac needs to be power cycled.  You should also look over the audio devices portion of the manual.

Cheers

Hi Chris,

Re-verified the audio devices settings and cycled everything.  Still having issues-will include service id and symptoms again in email to you.  Thanks for help.  The error messages may have been from when I was playing around with different sources to test, seems to be playing without those MPD errors I posted, but same issues exist.

Thanks!

Your music files are they stored on a USB drive or across the network?

Hi  Chris,

Just sent you an email too.  All my files are on an internal SSD HD I installed inside the BDP-2.
