Recommendation Needed - Class A Monoblocks
« on: 26 Jan 2015, 04:38 pm »
Hi,

I would like your recommendation for a solid state class A monoblock amplifier that has about 50w of power each for a bedroom stereo setup.  My budget is $1000 for each.

Thanks in advance.

The only thing I can think of is the Emotiva XPA-1.....73lbs each and switchable to 60 watts class A each ($1100 list each).  I will have a 35lb. totally tweak dual mono stereo 25 watt class A amp for $2000 out soon (50 watts into 4 ohms).  Most other class A amps are really expensive.

If you can get by with 35W @ 8ohm Class A, transitioning to 250W @ 8ohm / 500W @ 4ohm Class A/B (vs. 600W/1000W), you can do it for almost half the cost with the Emotiva XPA-1L ($599 each).

Wonder if you really need 50 wpc for a bedroom system, your criteria is extremely tough to fit, and you should be aware of the dangers of "smoking" in bed (these designs run really hot) but here goes:

Hawk A18 (20 wpc, $1260)  http://www.tnt-audio.com/ampli/hawk_a18_e.html   (link is from 2002)

Monarchy Audio SM70 (25 wpc but can be run in bridged mode, $980).  Look for early ones that ran really hot (hotter the better with most class A solid state amps).  Don't know if they're still in business.

Several class A/B amps run pure class A for the first 10 watts or so.  That's enough to get into very loud territory (over 90 dB) in most room/speaker efficiency setups.

Agree. I think we'll be able to provide more/better recommendations if you provide info about the room size and the speakers you'll be using.

The guys are correct. Give us more info to work with. How ip big is the room? What kind of speakers? Types of music? How loud?

I always think of bedroom systems as playing softly, most likely background levels. Help us help you.
