Finished my dual 12" servo sub - at last
« on: 22 Jan 2015, 05:09 pm »
Took over a month to build this monster, much of it in the middle of my sound room due to cold weather.  I plan to build another later, which should go much easier with what I have learned.  For the past few years I have used a couple of 18" sealed Bag End Infrasonic subs which do a fine job and sit out of the way in the front corners (where they sound best to me) and I plan to eventually have a shoot out between the two types.  In the meantime I am running the servo sub as a mono sub for both channels and have it behind and between the main speakers.  Can I place the sub on it's side and get good results?  It would look much better to me.  In fact, I think a pair of these placed horizontally up on about 6" legs would be a great retro look.  Many thanks to all who helped get me through this.

Looks good.

And laying it on its side will be fine.

Looks good, I can't get the final coat of paint to come out right on mine.  I will sand it down again tonight.  I might have too get some spray paint.  Any ideas?

Still too soon to judge the sound - only played for a few minutes.  Today I have them flipped upside down and am painting the bottom, since I want to lay the speaker on it's side.  As far as finishing, I gave up a couple of years ago and now just paint everything with a latex paint, using a roller to give it some texture.  I worked at sealing the exposed MDF edges, sealing them with glue, wood paste and even bondo, sanded until I felt nothing.   And yet, the edge just stands out anyway.  I have decided to live with it.  I am not sure I will ever commit to any piece of gear long enough to invest in a fine professional finish.  I will say the build design of these speakers far surpasses the Bag Ends, which are just 3/4" MDF glued together.

So it's not only a Servo sub, but an OB Servo in an H-Frame! As Danny said, side orientation is fine---in fact, I recommend that owners of the original Quad ESL speakers use them that way. They make a great Quad stand as well as sub! Just put three Symposium Roller Blocks between the sub cab and the speaker bottom, to prevent the transmission of vibrations from the sub to the speaker.
