I have upgraditis. I now use a 4BSST2, driving Legacy Focus SE with AMT tweeters. I like to play things on the louder side, 95-105 db at times. And to head off the hearing police, the system is in my living room, and I don't generally listen on-axis; so the db level is actually less at my ears.

It is just a gut feeling of mine that the AZ Crescendos I have make better use of the 4B than do the Focus SE.
The sound of the SST2 is so sweet, I'd like to upgrade within the line.

Anyone that has gone from the 4B to the Bryston monoblocks, please share your knowledge...

Thank you.

More than a few years back I went from a 4B-SST (not the latest squared version) to a 14B-SST (almost a pair of 7Bs in a single chassis) and the largest gain I had at the time was the low level detail retrieval I realized. I heard so much more at lower volumes so I would think moving to a pair of 7s would give you this upgrade if not more of the same given the increased capacitance and probably reduction of cross-talk having each channel distanced from each other.

I then went from the 14B-SST to 7B-SST2 a few years ago but my comparison of the prior generation 4B & 14B was the most enlightening.

I've owned a variety of Bryston amps since the 80's and while I have heard the 28s in a couple of systems of the 14B/7B/28B I believe the 7Bs are the sweet spot of the group, but that's just my opinion.

Hi James,
I had a 4BSST/2 and a 4/BSST driving a pair of the second generation Focus. I changed amps to the 7BSST/2 and bi-wired the Focus. I agree with Ron if anything the bass got a little more defined and a lower the noise floor. I now have the Legacy Aeris with the 7BSST/2.
Both the Focus and the Aeris are 95db 4 ohms so the 4 BSST/2 is giving you about 500 watts. My 4B's and 7's never get warm. The 7's and 28's have different transformers which seem to lower the noise floor. I think where you might notice the biggest difference is the 28's. I'm not sure but I think 28's run in Class A twice as much as the 7's and with 95db efficiency those 28 would just coast.

What I noticed with Bryston and Legacy was getting a Bit-20. Hooked up all my source components to the Bit and veil was taken off the music. I believe the 7 & 28's would be the first step in lowering that veil. Every upgrade I made there was always some improvement in sound along with lowering noise floor.

Save some money and get the 7's and a Bit-20. Hope this helps.

Hi James,

I have some questions for you regarding the Legacy Focus SE AMT and the AZ Crescendo's with your 4B's and don't want to take your thread off topic so look for a PM.

Thanks,

Bill

I just sent you a long, rambling reply...
