Now that Darren T is out of the game.. Damn you Darren :-) ... Who is making the best cabinets for the 1801 at this time without the 13 month wait for Dave's?

I would love something close to the amazing Walnut speakers I have seen here from Darren.

So far I have seen references to two makers, Salk and John Bateman who made the nice birdseye set. It didn't look like they had very much gloss to them though.

Does anyone know of any other makers or possible a way to convince Darren to come out of retirement for one last pair of Walnuts?

Please Darren?

I highly recommend Chris G. from Terrawood Design Co.  He did an superb job on my sub enclosures and is currently building some cabinets for Rick Craig of Selah Audio.  You might contact him for more detail, see  link below.

I don't know if he will sell you a cabinet but Jim Sauk makes the best cabinets I have ever seen.  It takes him countless hours to make a pair but they are museum quality.  He is a true artist.  I think his site is sauksound.com but you can do a search on Yahoo to find it.

Thanks,
Jack

Thanks for the feedback on Salk cabinets. I have looked at this site and I reference him up in my message. Perhaps it is just the quality of the photographs on the site, but I didn't understand that they were of this high a quality. He is definitely on my short list.

I agree, Jim is no photographer!  I had a pair of his speakers in my livingroom, I think they were burled redwood.  He had something like 40 or 50 coats of finish, each one hand sanded.  Jim is obsessive about the quality of his cabinets.  Please note, Jim's work is not inexpensive but it's the highest quality I have ever seen.  More like a museum piece than a speaker.  He has squirreled away lots of really exotic woods and, depending on your budget, can make you an amazing set of exotic wood speakers.  He has some of the wood that is used in the interior of Maybach cars and some of the rarest woods on the planet.  He's also a really good guy.

Also, if you want a pair of well constructed boxes for lower price and don't need Jim's level of detail and exotic wood finishes, you might want to call Brian King.   Brian makes nice cabinets and doesn't charge a lot.  Look for hm on the Madisound board.

I agree with Jack on most things.  This topic is certainly included.  Jim Salk builds a killer cabinet.  His finish work is stunning, and his structural work is excellent too.  Jim's wife told me that Jim will often visit the shed for months while finishing the same set of cabinets with danish oil.  Jim confirmed applying 60 coats of this stuff to one pair of cabinets to obtain the desired appearance.  Jim doesn't work for free, but he'd probably make more $/hr cutting grass for his neighbors.

John is making me a new subwoofer cabinet now finished in fiddle back maple.

John's prices are reasonable too.

Will let you know how it turns out.
