I am tired of giving Comcast money, $8/month for this thing.

What can I purchase out there and not give up the $8/month?

Thanks

then get wireless router of your choice.

Combo gateway modem/wireless routers have mixed reviews. Seems best to keep things separate.

Motorola SB6141
That's what I'm using it now and it's much faster than the TWC modem

Here's the list of certified modems. I would stick with a three star one.

On the wireless side so far I have had great performance from this $20 wifi router:

As wushuliu says keep them separate. It seems like that the folks like Arris that know how to make really good modems do not know wireless.

There is a great article over at Computer Audiophile regarding dedicated components for a home network.  Costco has the Surfboard modems for ~$80.

Thank you all, I will look into these.  I was hoping to get an all in one and not a separate cable modem and wireless router, but the latter may be a better way to do it.

Thanks!

I've been using the SB6141 with my provider for a year along with an Asus RT-AC66U Router (which does not take up a huge amount of space - and I have a couple switches on top of  it as I send wired ethernet all over and need more than the four outputs) and the combo works real well)

I've been using a Motorola SBG6580 Cable Modem + WiFi Router combo with my Comcast service for going on three years now.  It works fantastic.  It's $115.21 from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-SURFboard-SBG6580-Packaging-570763-006-00/dp/B0040IUI46/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1416601052&sr=8-1&keywords=Motorola+SBG6580

The only thing I have wired to it is my work VPN router, my NAS server and our Ooma phone service.  Everything else is WiFi.  It's in my office and flawlessly transmits 24bit/192kHz FLAC to my Squeezebox Touch in the living room and Netflix HD / Vudu HDX to our Panasonic plasma in the family room all while my wife and son are surfing the internet or playing Minecraft from their laptops.  I'm very happy with the setup - love having everything in a single box.
