Anyone using a class D home theater amp?
« on: 3 Sep 2014, 05:21 pm »
I'm thinking about trying a class D amp to replace my Butler TDB-5150. I really like the Butler, but it's on a lot and gets very warm. Between that and the 65" plasma, the room can get pretty hot. Looking at Wyred, D-Sonic and Axiom 5 channel amps. Oppo BDP-105 direct to amp feeding Von Schweikert VR35, LCR15 and surrounds.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I use 5 channels of Channel Islands Audio class D amps for my center and surround channel. I am very happy with the sound. I still use class A/B for my mains.

I went to a class D amp (W4S monoblock) for the center channel (got rid of a 3-channel amp).  Still use class A/B for the left and right.  Happy with sound.

I think Class D makes tons of sense for HT for most people.......particularly for the reason you state. You can leave the amp on 24/7 without heating the place or wasting significant energy, which in turn makes things easier for other people in the household to use too (ie less stuff for them to remember to turn on/off). I think most would agree (generally speaking) that Class D these days can sound very good to excellent. It's less hit or miss than it used to be.
I have a Rotel RMB-1077 and though it doesn't have the latest ICE modules nor is it the most powerful, sounds great. This was perhaps THE multichannel (more than 2 channel) Class D amp that really opened the eyes of many HT enthusiasts and was among the first of it's kind. Rotel worked closely with B&O to do it right, and I think they pulled it off nicely. Here's a very comprehensive booklet Rotel put together. I'm guessing it was primarily intended for Rotel dealers. It goes into great detail about the design and engineering that went into the amp. This wasn't just a box with ICE modules packed in it. These days, it may fly under many people's radars.

I don't right now but I am thinking of swapping my Anthem MRX-300 for an Outlaw 975 pre/pro, W4S MMC-5, and Antimode for the sub in the hopes of improved channel separation and clarity.

Like RDavidson, I too used a Rotel 1077 for quite a while and it is a nice piece of kit for sure.  I am currently in process of building out 5 of the NCores to update the system this year.

I've found my axiom ADA-1000-4 (was considering the next upgrade and the move to surround duty when I ordered it) to be the perfect compliment to my 3 front speakers in our current (small) HT.
My AVR shares surround duty at the moment.
The ADA-1500 will eventually sit in the same rack.

Though not a separate amp, Pioneer has turned to D class amplifiers in their new Elite Receivers and amplifiers to get less of a power drop when all channels are running.  Oh, and if anyone is wondering if the new Dolby ATMOS is worth investigating the answer is yes.  Amazing sound though with 4 additional speakers running.  Find a proper demo and you will be amazed.
