VPI Prime
« on: 25 Feb 2015, 07:52 pm »
I just set up my new Prime over the weekend.  Right out of the box - wow!

To my ears in my system, it is a substantial upgrade over my former Classic 1.  I found the Classic 1 lacking in upper bass/lower treble, making it sound very lean.  The Prime is dead neutral and dead quiet.  This is real bargain for what it is.  Once it fully burns in I'll compare it to my reference - a heavily modded Teres.  I'm pretty sure the Prime will be quieter, but not sure that it will match it for detail retrieval, bass weight and body.  We'll see.

What would there be to "burn in"?

VPI says the motor, and it wouldn't surprise me if the bearing settles or works in the lube etc.  But I don't imagine it will represent any dramatic changes.  It's an older cartridge, so that shouldn't change.

Well let's see....an electro-mechanical device that reacts to physical undulations in the micron range, so....motor...bearings...belts....and as Bob stated above cartridge & wires.  Other than those, not a thing!

OP didn't say that there was a new cartridge, so I'm just wondering how OP would compare new to old? If OP installed a new/different cartridge, then the new Prime would sound different.
