LFD Integrated Amps
« on: 9 Jul 2014, 10:42 pm »
Hello All,

I'm looking at LFD Amps and a dealer in Austin, Texas advises that he believes that my HT2-TLs are too much of a load for a LFD LE Mark IV amp.  Checking the specs and knowing that I initially used the speakers with a 1960s era 35 wpc Fisher tube integrated, I find that hard to believe.  I've sent Jim an inquiry but I'm curious whether any of you are using LFD amplification with your speakers and, if so, what Salk speakers are you using?

Thanks, Dave

Do you know the general power output specs, or have a link for LFD amps?  If those LFD amps are stable with a 4 ohm load, they should work.  The HT2-TLs are considered 4 ohm speakers, but if I recall, they don't dip lower than 4 ohms.  As you have observed with that 35 wpc amp, the HT2-TLs don't make low powered amps swoon.

These speakers are capable of handling power in the 200 to 250 wpc range, and I think they benefit from it.  You will probably notice more potent and cleaner sounding bass with the higher power.

When dealers recommend larger and more potent amps, I always suspect profit margin is on their mind.  There are plenty of others amps available that can deliver 200 to 250 wpc.

RS,

The LFD I'm looking at puts out about 60 wpc and the dealer says it shouldn't have any problem with a 4 ohm speaker, especially as Jim advised that it never goes below 4 ohms and, typically, is more like a 6 ohm speaker.  I've been running a class D amp with 250 wpc into 8 ohms so about 500 wpc into 4 ohms.  The HT2-TLs have no problem handling that power.  The dealer believes that the LFD will give me a completely different sound experience and he's willing to take the amp back if I'm not satisfied.  I need to determine what the restocking fee will look like but he has been around a long time and he has been great to deal with in the past.
