Double Dayton on the cheap
« on: 14 Jul 2014, 01:27 am »
Parts Express sent me a new pair of B652's to replace my defective ones but I got to keep the defective ones. After swapping the bad tweeters with some similar KLH BB closeouts of a few years back and upgrading the caps I ended up with a quad of very nice sounding Daytons.

The following link inspired me to stack the Daytons:  http://cheaptubeaudio.blogspot.com/2013/10/review-dayton-audio-b652.html

On regular stands these puppies are tall.

Tried driving them with a SET but they needed more power. Switched to the TPA3116 and it worked ok but more power would have been much better. Unfortunately the little TPA is the most powerful amp I own.

Placed them on top of the Frugal Horns for fun and they seemed to sound better than on stands.

All in all the Double Daytons were a worthwhile experiment. As you would expect they have a much larger presentation than a single pair. Given the room, better location and more wattage they'd be keepers. Four would be about the same price as a pair of Pioneer B22's on sale. I have the Pioneers which are more refined but too polite and bass shy for my tastes.

Thanks and I try.

My motto is cheap can sound great and I got the Lowthers used.

One should proceed with extreme caution when buy expensive equipment because the loss can be great if the equip did not please or in case of a possible sale.

Hi Poultrygeist.
I agree 1,000% with you.
(As per my avatar: Audio should be simple and as inexpensive as possible)
All my drivers 4 X 12" subs, two Omega 7F and Danny SA1 plate amplifiers amount to 550 USD
plus the Made on planet Vietnam enclosures: 250 USD/pair.
800 USD for speakers that make me smile each time I listen to them, best I ever had.
Not perfect, but my ears enjoy the sound.

I like your speakers.

Very clever. I remember years ago when I sold them that we did a double Advent system with Large Advents. With enough power (lots) that may have been the best sound I've ever heard.

Thanks guys.

I got in trouble on another forum when I posted the question, "$5000 for a DAC"?

Another configuration with two matching pairs of stand-mounts is to mount the first pair on stands and the second on the floor, under the stands, pointing up.

See Duke LeJeune's Zephrin 46 thread here at Audio Circle (what he calls a "Vertical Offset Bipole"), with credit going to James Romeyn for the idea (Late Ceiling Splash):

Jimbo had a post a while back with all of the how to's on this configuration, but mentions on the thread you linked that he has removed all of the proprietary info now that the idea has gone commercial.  I haven't checked to see if that's the case, however I seem to remember you wired in series and used a skirt on the front firing speakers.  Or something like that.
