This is an alternative to bulky and visually obtrusive bass traps that works well if you can install it as the manufacturer intends. Clayton Shaw has engineered a solution to a problem that vexes most listening rooms, peaks and dips in the room response. Refer to Spatial Computing's website for an in depth explanation of how it works and what it is.

I purchased this from Weinhart Designs in L.A. last November as a demo. I'd been adding traditional acoustic controls (bass traps, etc.) to my listening area and had managed to get my room within +/- 6 db. of being flat. Hoping to get the room to measure as flat as possible, I  purchased this even though I could not install it as Clayton Shaw/Spatial recommended (behind the listening seat.) It did flatten my room response another 2db. However, that 2 db. measured improvement didn't translate to a significant audible improvement, oh well. Tuning a room can take a bit of experimentation. In a room with more significant problems than mine, results should be different. I'm asking $495.00, sells for $1295.00 new.

There are a number of small blemishes in the painted satin finish, nothing major, but it isn't an example that you'd use for a product photo in a catalog. There is a definite home brew D.I.Y. character to the way Spatial solved the problem of how to attach the measurement mic at the plane of the sub, strips of velcro are used to hold the mic and equalizer assembly to the back of the sub. The amp makes enough heat in stand-by mode that if you leave it on all the time, you'll turn the velcro adhesive gooey in a few months. I cleaned all the original adhesive off when I received the sub and installed new velcro. David Weinhart had lost the original 12-15 volt. dc power supply so I replaced it with a Radio Shack multi-voltage 1.5-12 v. power supply.

If you look for a review on this product, the only review of consequence I've found is Srajan's on Six Moons. Like me, Srajan couldn't install the Black Hole as intended and this resulted in a rather "meh" review. My advice based on my experience is to make sure you can use this as instructed (BEHIND the listener's seating.)

I've got the original shipping box. I'll calculate actual shipping charges and charge the same, I get discounted FedEx rates through my work. Probably about 45 pounds
total shipping weight. Ships from Tampa, Florida 33612

Looks interesting...and I could install it behind my listening set but I just installed some new bass traps.
