Level Control vs Input Sensitivity Switch
« on: 28 Jun 2014, 06:23 pm »
Hi James & all,

Technically, what are the difference and/or relationship between the pro model's level control (0 dB fully clockwise thru -14 dB fully counter-clockwise) and the input sensitivity switch 23dB vs 29dB of the Bryston amps?

Would setting the level control at fully clockwise (0 dB) gives "purer" signal than attenuating it lower, or vice versa?

Thanks,
Klao

Sensitivity sets the voltage required on the input to drive the amplifier (1Volt or 2 Volts) and the gain or level control determines the amount of gain (typically 29 Db) through the amplifier. Always use the gain control at fully up on the Pro model if you can. Also if you do not need gain control in your application buy the consumer unit as it does not have that gain control pot in the circuit path at all.

Thank you, James.  My 28B-SST2 pair comes in pro models. When you said "Always use the gain control fully up..", that means at the loudest level for both amps, correct?

The manual stated that "Use the 23dB setting with any systems where the volume control rotation is limited to the bottom half of the control or less".  Does this imply that it's better to increase the system volume via line level preamp, rather than increasing the amp's gain which may increase more noise?

I'm running a fully balance system driving the Maggie 20.7.  At 23dB setting and max level control on the 28B-SST2 amps, my line level preamp volume (when playing vinyl) gives enough loudness at its half point of volume control (around 40-45 of the 88 total stepsl).  Is this OK?

Correct - use the gain control on the amp at full clockwise position and adjust the sensitivity to allow for appropriate preamp volume control rotation.
